On October 5th, we had an incredible time of networking with STEM academic and industry leaders in Chicago along with an effective Keynote talk by Michelle Burbea Hoffmann on the Chicago Biotech Ecosystem. Thank you very much to everyone who attended the event from all over the US and India; and helped it make a huge success.

Our invited speakers and panelists shared their career journeys and provided deeper insights into their job functions. In addition, attendees learned about scientific writing, resume tips, leadership aspects and how to address mental health. Beyond the sessions and talks, so many meaningful conversations, new collaborations, and long-lasting connections were formed.
Tremendous thanks to our Sponsors: Bencos Research Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Hollister Incorporated Rosenblatt Life Science Consultants and InSphero for their generous sponsorship. It takes a lot of persistence and determination to accomplish great things and achieve bigger goals. Especially, to succeed in scientific careers, along with your passion, you need a great community of fellow scientists and peer mentors. Realizing that early on in your career and building a strong network is key that can help prevent any future obstacles.

Dr. Alka Gupta (Ph.D.) is a well-accomplished scientist with expertise in Epigenetics and RNA biology research areas who happens to know the importance of such networking. Dr. Gupta is a Postdoctoral Fellow at UCSC and also holds a prestigious fellowship from CIRM for her work in stem cells. As an attendee of the last two years' STEMPeers annual conferences, she has taken her interest in the scientific community and effective networking one step further by being part of the organizing team for this year's conference. She is a great team player, an effective communicator, and is eager to meet the attendees in Chicago and share her experiences.

Keeping a community vibrant needs an army of dedicated volunteers. Just like any other volunteer-driven organization, STEMPeers has had the privilege of working with some of the finest individuals who work both behind the scenes and on the front lines to ensure that our community gets the best of career-related information simply by scrolling or signing up to join a Zoom call to talk to people who have been there and done that.

Ajinkya Sase is one such kind soul in our leadership with sharpness of vision to grow the organization. He was the first member of STEMPeers to hold an AMA (ask me anything) live session on J1 waiver process in 2018. He understood that most of us are not articulate enough to pen the right questions about this process and an AMA is going to make access to information easier.

True to his belief in STEMPeers, and his collaborative approach, he led the revival of the in-person STEMPeers in Philly (2022), a major challenge for this community to resume in-person networking after COVID19.

Ajinkya never looked back since then. As one of the core members of the Mentor Mantra series, he has facilitated open discussions on diverse topics academic industrial careers for STEM-trained returnees to India, Midcareer growth with industry leaders in US, financial planning for STEM trainees in US, as well as using an O1 visa immigration to realize your entrepreneurial dream in United States.

With someone with this level of knowledge, it is amazing that he is willing to join us again in Chicago and share his insights.

STEMPeers: Driven by Altruism, Powered by STEM

PhD Career Support Group (www.stempeers.org) -A US Non Profit 501(c)3 was founded by the alumni of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India but is an institution agnostic organization. The primary aim of this group is to buildup NETWORK among scientists and engineers and entrepreneurs. In a highly competitive world, network becomes extremely important to determine one's career growth. Not only careers but an emotional support system is also extremely crucial in a world where the dynamics of life changes very fast.

Career Development

It is a known fact that most of the STEM researchers won’t be absorbed in academia as faculties. Over the years we have realized that a large number of STEM researchers and trainees have not been made aware of why and how additional training is required and that could be immensely useful in helping them achieve a sustainable career. The foundation provides educational, training, and mentoring platforms for various resources and opportunities for the STEM researchers to look beyond bench-science careers.
