First Food The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ First Food program expands on our Keystone 10 program.

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics First Food program promotes health and well-being of mothers and babies by fostering collaboration between community organizations and hospitals regionally. Keystone 10 is a quality improvement breastfeeding initiative aimed at improving the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding for all Pennsylvania infants, mothers, and families. Keystone 10 promotes health through family centered care. The Pennsylvania Department of Health launched the Keystone 10 initiative in 2015 as a means to assist Pennsylvania’s birthing facilities in adopting and implementing evidence-based maternity care practices with the goal of improving individual facility and state level breastfeeding care, increasing breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity and duration rates and ultimately improving the health of mothers and babies. First Food was developed out of the need to foster community support around breastfeeding. The goals of First Food is serve to improve equity in breastfeeding rates and eliminate breastfeeding disparities. Community partners in collaborative work groups and accountability communities will identify their target needs in order to promote, support and protect breastfeeding among their breastfeeding participants, employees or members. Breastmilk as a “first food” will be emphasized as well as the profound health benefits to both mother, infant and the community when breastfeeding is a cultural norm.

Babies communicate when they are hungry and full through their behaviors and body language. Understanding and learning how to recognize these can help parents and caregivers respond to their baby's needs and support healthy habits.

Whether someone is breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or both, following the important feeding cues can help the parent or caregiver feel more confident as they navigate feedings.

Nutrition plays an essential role in keeping infants healthy and supporting their growth and development, while also introducing new textures, tastes, and food types early in life.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for approximately the first six months of life, followed by breastfeeding with complimentary foods for at least two years or longer.

Complimentary feeding allows infants to continue to receiving the nutritional benefits of breast milk, while gradually exploring solid foods. Through their senses of taste, smell, and touch, infants begin to recognize different foods and become familiar with new textures and flavors. These early experiences lay a foundation for developing healthy eating habits.

Handwashing is a crucial habit that can prevent the spread of bacteria, illnesses, and keep parents, children, and communities safe. When hand expressing or using a breast pump, keeping your hands and equipment clean can help prevent spreading unwanted bacteria to your child.

Washing your hands and pumping equipment often helps stop germs from passing between you and your baby. If you are using a breast pump, make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper cleaning directions and usage.

Mental illness can look vastly different from one person to the next. Some may show signs and symptoms, while some may show nothing at all. Reach out and offer support to those around you who may be struggling.

❤️It's okay to not be okay.
❤️It's okay to ask for help.

Let's normalize asking for help because mental illness is common and should not be ignored.

Breastmilk has so many amazing benefits in supporting the health and well-being of infants and children. Early healthy nutrition allows children a great start to a healthy lifestyle by receiving a nutritional diet. Breast milk continues to change as the baby grows, changing in ways to make sure they receive the proper vitamins, nutrients, fats, water, and proteins.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends infants receive breastmilk exclusively through 6 months of age, then being introduced to solid foods. At this time, the infant will continue to receive the benefits of breastmilk, but also additional nutrients that are in solid foods.

By the time they are 7 or 8 months old, they can begin eating various foods from different food groups including:
🥕Vegetables
🍎Fruits
🥩Meats and other proteins
🥛Dairy without added sugars
🍞Whole grains

Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. Making sure that a plan is in place on what to do or being prepared can help exponentially with increasing your and your family's safety.

Having a first aid kit, an emergency escape plan, and knowing what to do in an emergency is important. But do you know what you or your family need in case of an unexpected emergency?

What does your family need? Do you need to pack extra flashlights, a whistle, food and water, or a first aid kit?

What does your child(ren) need? Will they need medication, diapers, bottles, and other feeding supplies? What about medical equipment, do they need electricity to work?

Your and your family's safety is important, being prepared can help in these situations.

They grow up so quick! ❤️

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for approximately 6 months of age, but then what happens? Time to introduce new foods in addition to breastmilk!

Beginning with great nutrition at a young age can support a healthy lifestyle for infants and toddlers. Giving them the best start possible can support their health and growth.

If you have additional questions about starting solids with your little one, visit your pediatrician for more information.

"How are you doing?" is such an important question to ask parents. Asking those simple words can make a world of a difference.

Breastfeeding can be a beautiful part of the postpartum journey, but it unfortunately may not always go to plan. Breastfeeding an infant can be challenging at times even if a parent has multiple children. Each child can be different when it comes to breastfeeding or formula feeding. Either option can bring difficulties and challenges which can make someone, anyone, feel overwhelmed.

Postpartum depression (PPD) can affect up to 1 in 7 parents after giving birth. There is no shame in asking for help. Whether you need mental support or feeding support, you deserve proper care throughout the postpartum journey.

Happy Labor Day!

Today is a day to celebrate all the hardworking parents, caregivers, doulas, CLCs/IBCLCs, and everyone who continues to work hard by providing nutrition to infants and little ones.

We are grateful for all the hard work and dedication that providers continue to make for infants to receive the best benefits possible through early solids and breastfeeding. Providing support, a shoulder to lean on, and education to parents regarding nutrition.

Parents and caregivers, we thank you for your hard work in providing care and love to your children and family. Giving them the greatest chance at a healthy life, working hard towards their health.

We thank you all for everything you do for your community, family, and children.
