First Hand Foundation exists to fill the gap in a child’s access to health care, because every child deserves joy and a future of possibility.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming the team from the GP MADE Foundation to spend time with us at First Hand Foundation.

Through their generous grant support, GP M.A.D.E. is helping expand access to care for children facing complex medical challenges. It was a joy to share more about the work, the families we serve, and the impact made possible through partnerships like this.

Their mission of Making A Difference Every-day in the life and future of children and youth facing difficult challenges deeply resonates with our own. The alignment was clear, and the conversation left us energized about the opportunities ahead.

We’re grateful for partners who take the time to learn, connect, and invest in meaningful impact — and we look forward to continuing this work together.

Today is National Child Health Day.

For First Hand Foundation, child health means making sure a family doesn’t have to choose between what their child needs and what they can afford.

It means helping pay for medical treatment, equipment and travel when insurance and other resources fall short.

It means bringing health screenings directly to children in schools so concerns can be identified earlier and families can get connected to follow-up care.

And it means showing up for families at the exact moment a gap in access could become a barrier to a child’s health.

This year alone, First Hand has provided more than $1.5 million in assistance to children and families, and through Healthe Kids, we are working to bring comprehensive health screenings to thousands more children across Kansas City.

And there is something else we want people to know:

The infrastructure that makes this work possible is funded separately, allowing community support to go directly toward impact.

So on National Child Health Day, we’re asking you to help us reach the next child.

Behind every First Hand grant is a child who needs something pretty simple: the chance to get the care they need.

Three-year-old Sage needed intensive physical therapy to help build strength and improve her mobility. For her family, the cost of a four-week program that insurance wouldn’t cover created a gap they couldn’t cover alone.

First Hand stepped in to help fund Sage’s therapy, helping her access the care her team recommended.

Tomorrow is National Child Health Day.

For us, it’s a reminder that access to health care isn’t an abstract issue. It looks like individual kids, individual families and very real gaps that can be solved.

And that is exactly why First Hand exists.

A child’s health shouldn’t depend on whether their family can afford the equipment, treatment or travel it takes to get them care.

But for families across the country, those gaps are very real.

At First Hand Foundation, we step in when insurance, other resources or a family’s own finances simply aren’t enough.

We help children get the care they need and give families one less thing to carry.

Meet Augustine! This little guy has been putting in the work in physical and occupational therapy, and now he has some new gear to help him keep going.

Augustine needed bilateral AFOs to give him more support with alignment, balance and stability as he works toward standing and walking independently.

First Hand Foundation was able to help cover the cost — and a big shoutout to our friends at Hanger Clinic, who made sure Augustine’s teddy bear got some matching gear, too. 🧸 Because clearly, every good sidekick needs the same look.

Keep moving, Augustine. We’re cheering you on every step of the way!

A fun little pop of KC spirit from our screening team today while they were out doing the work that matters most — helping kids stay healthy and ready to learn.

Because showing up for kids is always worth cheering for.

We’ve been talking about 15,000 kids for months.

Next week, we start meeting them.

This summer has been all about getting ready — planning, training, packing, preparing and building everything it takes to bring Healthe Kids back into schools across Kansas City.

And we didn’t do it alone.

To every volunteer who packed dental bags, every nurse and team member who spent time training, and every person who helped us get ready for this moment: thank you. Thousands of supplies have been packed, our screening teams are ready, and now it’s finally time to put all of that preparation into action.

Next week, Healthe Kids officially heads back into schools to provide free health screenings and help connect students and families with the care and resources they need.

This next chapter is finally here, and we’re excited to bring you along for it.

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing the schools, the people, the stories and the impact behind this work.

What a difference a summer can make.

After a whirlwind few months preparing to bring Healthe Kids back to schools across Kansas City, yesterday we had the opportunity to bring our incredible team of screeners together for training.

Many of these faces have spent years caring for students through Healthe Kids, and we are incredibly grateful they chose to continue this work alongside First Hand Foundation. Their experience, flexibility, and commitment have been invaluable as we prepare for a new chapter of the program.

In just a few short weeks, this team will be back in schools providing free health screenings to thousands of children across our community — making sure kids have access to the care and resources they need to be healthy and thrive.

Bringing Healthe Kids back on a very short timeline has taken a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes. Seeing this team together and ready to carry that work into schools makes us even more excited for what comes next.

Healthe Kids is growing our screening team as we prepare to head into Kansas City-area schools this fall!

This isn’t your typical nursing role. Our team spends school days meeting kids where they are and helping identify health needs that might otherwise go unnoticed — because something as simple as a vision, hearing or health screening can make a big difference in a child’s ability to learn, grow and thrive.
