“While you’re climbing the ladder of life and pulling yourself up to the next rung, don’t forget to reach back and pour into somebody else coming behind you.”

That was part of the message Nigel Johnson had the opportunity to share with graduates of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City ‘s Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program.

Graduation is an accomplishment worth celebrating—but it’s also another beginning.

The skills, relationships and opportunities these graduates have developed can lead to jobs, apprenticeships and careers. For some, they may eventually lead to entrepreneurship, business ownership and the ability to create opportunities for others.

Because success becomes even more powerful when you can use what you’ve learned to help somebody else move forward.

That’s a principle at the heart of H.O.O.D. Hope Foundation: Helping Our Own Development.

Keep climbing. And when you can, reach back.

Another beginning. 🎓

Congratulations to the graduates of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City’s Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program!

Over the past several weeks, H.O.O.D. Hope Foundation has had the opportunity to spend time with members of this cohort—talking about construction, career development, entrepreneurship, business ownership and what can come after learning a skill.

What has stood out to us is that there isn’t just one definition of success.

Some graduates will move directly into construction jobs. Some will pursue apprenticeships, certifications and additional training. Some are already thinking about entrepreneurship and eventually building businesses of their own.

Different paths. Same idea:

Keep developing. Keep building. Keep moving forward.

And hopefully, as these graduates climb, some will eventually return as the employers, contractors and mentors helping open doors for the people coming behind them.

That’s what H.O.O.D. — Helping Our Own Development — is all about.

Congratulations to every graduate, and thank you to the Urban League of Greater Kansas City for allowing us to be part of the journey.

This isn’t the end. It’s another beginning.

Sometimes the next opportunity starts with simply seeing what’s possible.

This week, H.O.O.D. Hope Foundation returned to the Urban League of Greater Kansas City to spend time with another cohort of participants in its Project Pathways construction training program.

🛠️ MORE THAN GETTING A JOB

This time, the conversation went beyond simply getting a job.

We talked about skilled trades, career opportunities, entrepreneurship, and the possibility of eventually turning a trade into something you own.

Hassan shared his own journey—including overcoming incarceration, building a career in HVAC, and using those skills as a pathway toward business and greater opportunity.

That kind of testimony matters because sometimes people need more than information. They need to see somebody who has faced real obstacles and still found a way forward.

🔧 CONNECTING SKILLS TO OPPORTUNITY

We also brought tools into the conversation and talked about the practical side of working in the trades.

The goal wasn’t to tell anyone that there is only one road to success. It was to help widen the picture of what is possible.

🏠 A construction skill can become a job.

A job can become a career.

A career can become a business.

And a business can become an asset that changes the trajectory of a family.

That is a big part of what H.O.O.D. Hope Foundation means when we talk about education and economic opportunity: connecting knowledge to real-world pathways that can lead toward greater stability and ownership.

🤝 THANK YOU

Thank you to the Urban League of Greater Kansas City for inviting us back and continuing to invest in people who are willing to invest in themselves.

We look forward to continuing the work.

📣 BRING THIS CONVERSATION TO YOUR COMMUNITY

If your school, nonprofit, church, workforce program, or community organization is interested in bringing practical conversations around entrepreneurship, workforce development, financial literacy, homeownership, or economic opportunity to the people you serve, we’d love to connect.

Today was a powerful day.

H.O.O.D. Hope Foundation had the honor of partnering with the Urban League’s Project Pathways program to provide a hands-on workforce development experience for 11 participants eager to learn about skilled trades and entrepreneurship.

For more than an hour, students received exposure to HVAC, landscaping, and entrepreneurship opportunities through live demonstrations, professional tools, and real-world conversations with experienced tradesmen and business owners.

Too often, young people only hear about what they can’t do. We believe in showing them what they can become.

Every time we step into a classroom, training center, or community space, our mission remains the same: expose people to opportunities, build confidence, and help create pathways toward economic mobility, homeownership, entrepreneurship, and long-term success.

We are grateful to the Urban League of Greater Kansas City for allowing us to serve alongside them and invest in the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, tradespeople, homeowners, and community builders.

The future is bright when organizations come together to create opportunities and hope.

If your school, church, nonprofit, reentry program, or community organization would like H.O.O.D. Hope Foundation to provide workforce development, financial literacy, housing education, entrepreneurship, or life skills programming, send us a message. We would love to partner with you to make an impact in our community.
