This is Lola. She realizes that a lot of her kid friends are going back to school tomorrow, and she wanted to share this scientific study with them. Studies show, students do 33% better in school when they are exposed to adorable kitties before the start of the school year! * If you want your kids to succeed, Lola and 31 of her closest kitty friends are accepting snuggles until 5:00! (*this probably isnโ€™t a real scientific fact but we arenโ€™t going to argue with Lola)

One of the hardest parts of rescue is losing a kitty - we see them at their best, and we see them at their worst. It's heartbreaking. ๐Ÿ’” It's also one of of the hardest parts of opening your home and your heart to an adopted pet - but we think you'd agree that no matter how long they are with us, our pets bring enormous joy to our lives. ๐Ÿ’œ

Today is day. A chance to reflect on the pets that have played a role in your life and remember them. Remember all the purrs, all the playtime, all the snuggles and kisses. ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐ŸŒˆIf you'd like to make a donation in memory of a special kitty who has crossed the rainbow bridge, we will hang their photo on our Rainbow Wall at Kzoo Cat Cafe and Rescue in memory (on our "donate" page). They are why we do what we do. ๐ŸŒˆ

Weโ€™re mixing it up today - a $4 Friday! We love our new van, and itโ€™s helping us do more for the kitties! Our rescue has a lot of vet appointments, especially when our newest kittens are big enough for spay and neuter surgery, plus our community TNR appointments. Gas is about $4/gallon (ouch!), so weโ€™re asking for $4 donations to fill the tank for our next run!

Be honest - when is the last time your cat went to the vet?

Cats are naturally good at hiding when they are injured or don't feel well, because it makes them more vulnerable to predators... And although we humans aren't their predators, it makes it harder for us to make sure our kitties are healthy!

That's why it's SO important to take your cat to the vet every year! Your vet can monitor changes and patterns over time, and do a physical health exam and administer yearly vaccines!

August 22 is Take Your Cat to the Vet Day!! So today we want to bring attention to this important aspect of cat ownership! And one of the other top reasons we avoid seeing the vet is because our kitties don't like their carrier!!

Carrier training for kitties is almost just as important as going to the vet! We don't want carriers to be stressful for them, and we need to be able to get them in a carrier for travel to the vet or in case of an emergency!

Here is a nifty chart for carrier training that you can start working with your kitty on today!!

Kalamazoo friends - we have a random ask!!

Throughout the year, we collect returnables to fundraise for the kitties, but we've been so busy, our returnable bin in our basement is overflowing!! We wanted to see if anyone might be interested in helping out by returning a bag or two of cans/bottles this weekend? We are happy to trade a few bags for a free visit with the kitties when you're done!! Text us! 269-350-4099!

We also wanna know, for science, do you call it soda? Or pop? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Now that he's big enough, this little guy is finally getting surgery for his eyes!!

In early July, he came to us with swollen eyes and COVERED in fleas!! He was only a little over a month old so he's been working on growing big and strong in his foster home so we can help his little eyeballs! We are hoping he can keep at least one of them but we don't know for sure.

Along with this guy, we've got another kitten with a leg that needs to be amputated, three kitties currently going through FIP treatment and NINE cats going for spay/neuter tomorrow - and I'm gonna be honest, we are about -$6,000 in vet care funds from the last few months of summer ๐Ÿ˜ซ

For this - we are asking friends to please like, comment and share - and PLEASE donate if you are able!! The ONLY way we can care for these kitties is through fundraising!! As much as we hate constantly posting asking for help... It's the only way we can help them!! There are lots of ways to donate and support the kitties of Kzoo!! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Many of you probably heard this week about the encampment sweeps in downtown Kalamazoo, and I want to call attention to an oftentimes unconsidered effect of the housing crisis we are in - unhoused pets.

We have been incredibly lucky to be able to head out a few times recently with pet food and water bottles for unhoused pet owners. I've met lots of dogs and cats and their humans out there. We served 26 pets tonight.

The comments and reactions to this "story" are disgusting. Human beings talking about other human beings like they arent. Members of our community, especially people who are supposed to be leaders, should really learn the difference between resources that are offered to people, and resources that are accessible to people.

Think having a shelter or two in town eliminates the problem? Nope, they're full. They don't allow pets. You have to jump through 6174 hoops to qualify. They have a curfew. You make one wrong move when you're not at your best and you're trespassed. They're religiously affiliated. The woman who runs it via her personal cell phone number blocks you bc she doesn't like you. It's not clean or safe.... The list goes on...

And don't get me STARTED on pet rent... When we are calling apartment complexes and landlords to confirm pet policies for adoption applications and they tell us it's a $350 fee and $35 per month.... PER PET!!

So these options aren't always accessible to people. And that's the difference. That's what some folks fail to realize.

Would you give up a furry family member to go inside where they don't allow pets? I sure wouldn't.

And there are NO consistent and ACCESSIBLE options for our unhoused community members with pets. No matter what our "leaders" want to tell you.

I've been trying to call attention to this for over a year. Summers aren't getting any colder and winters sure aren't getting any warmer... Why aren't there accessible options for people with pets?! Where can they go when the temperature outside is unsafe?? What are we as a community doing to help?? It's always someone else's problem.

We have been trying to do what we can...
To remove barriers to affordable spay/neuter services? We got a transport van and started a TNR program.

To remove barriers to assistance with pet food? We give away food and other supplies when we have it, no questions asked (except do you need other assistance?) at the cafe, and doing outreach downtown when we can.

To remove barriers to shelter? We create winter cat shelters and continue to pressure our community "leaders" to quit playing the blame game, quit making excuses, and implement some solutions.

And instead making sh*tty comments, blaming others, or sweeping the issue under the rug and being part of the problem - let's work toward solutions. Not temporary bandaid solutions, not solutions that looks good for fundraising in a newspaper article but don't actually help anyone, ... Accessible solutions.

When we've posted about the pet crisis in Kalamazoo in the past, many of you asked how you can help... If you have food or funds you can donate, or even just a minute for a quick follow, like and share - every bit helps!! Want to get involved? Stay tuned ๐Ÿ‘€

Let's show some compassion for these pets AND their humans... Let's do better Kalamazoo ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’œ
