Aloha Animal Oasis

Aloha Animal Oasis Helping homeless cats through TNR and creating a safe haven. Aloha Animal Oasis is a registered 501c3. We are currently run by 100% volunteers and donations.

Our immediate goal is to reduce the number of free roaming cats on the Big Island through TNR, and our longer term goal is to create a cat sanctuary, where cats can live out their lives safely. Our sanctuary will be a place for cats and visitors alike. Our vision is imagining the Big Island where no cats are without safe shelter.

The Breakdown: Community Cats, TNVR, Ear Tipping, and Colony Management 🐾

What is a Community Cat?
Unowned outdoor cats living in neighborhood groups called colonies. Most are lost or abandoned pets, while some are wild born and not socialized or adoptable.

What is TNVR?
TNVR stands for Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return. The goal of TNVR is to humanely reduce free-roaming cat populations through sterilization and to stop the spread of disease through vaccination.

The Ear Tip
Done safely under anesthesia, a tipped ear is the universal sign that a cat is already sterilized and vaccinated.
-Left ear tip = Boy
-Right ear tip = Girl (because girls are always right! 😉)

Colony Management
Cats that have been trapped, sterilized, and ear-tipped are returned to their original location (colony) and are managed by caregivers. These caring volunteers monitor colony health at a glance, quickly spotting any newcomers to trap them for TNVR.

Their fosters have done the hard work. Every cat is (or will be) spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. All they need is a spot on your couch.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the kittens. While we can't guarantee a specific match, we promise to help find the perfect one for you.

📅 Date: June 20th
⏰ 1:30pm to 4:00pm
📍 Location: 75-5660 Kopiko St. in Kona (near the UPS Store)

**Must bring your own cat carrier! No exceptions.
**Some kittens are available for pre-adoption. They’ll be ready to take home after our June 28/29 clinic.
**Standard adoption fees apply to help cover their care.

Yesterday's half-day clinic with half of our usual vet team, made a huge impact. Check out these stats, nerds:

Clinic Scorecard:
49 Total cats: 27 Male / 22 Female
31 Neighborhood cats
18 'Ohana pets
49 Cats under 10 pounds

Say what? Yes, 100% of all cats were under 10 pounds, with the majority between 2 and 4 pounds. So what does that mean?

First, it tells us Kitten Season is in full swing.
Second, small cats are generally a few months old, which means we stopped the breeding cycle before it even starts.
Lastly, at this size, the surgeries are quick, the incisions are tiny, and the kittens bounce back almost instantly. Easier surgeries, faster recovery.

It was a good day.

After 5 years, Mala and Bruce have officially punched their final timecards at AAO. Today was their last spay/neuter clinic before they trade Kona’s lava fields for San Diego County.

Mala (alongside Lori) originally learned sterilization techniques from Beate of Petfix Spay and Neuter. From there, Mala and Bruce built the entire surgical prep process. We’re talking meticulous instrument scrubbing, origami-level surgical wrapping, and precise autoclave operations.

Of course, given that they are both biologists, it’s no surprise our Sterilization and Surgical Prep department runs almost as tight as a NASA laboratory. Mala rightfully earned the crown as our "Sterilization Queen," while Bruce reigned supreme as the "Autoclave Master."

It all started when they first moved to Kona and spotted a colony of free-roaming cats at an abandoned house on Walua Road. They understood that Hawai'i Island's fragile ecosystem was not balanced. Mala’s inner activist kicked into overdrive. "It’s hard to understand why people dump their cats or don't spay/neuter," Mala says. "Why don't they care?" Bruce, ever the practical scientist and President of Mala's Fan Club, agreed: "We just need to reduce the population."

Naturally, Mala had to take action, tracked down Lori, and threw herself into AAO. Bruce, meanwhile, joined the team because... well, he had absolutely no choice (if you know Mala, you know exactly what we mean. Happy wife, happy life, even in cat rescue!). We will miss them.

Along with their two lucky rescue kitties, Thor and Loki, we are sending this beloved duo off to SD with many mahalos and the deepest aloha.

San Diego has no idea how clean their surgical packs are about to get.
