We had a very good zoom presentation by Steven Fine from the Melanoma Education Foundation. In addition President Nancy Lowrey exchanged Club flags with Ray Burrell from the Goldsboro, North Carolina Rotary Sunrise Club. This morning Club President Nancy Lowrey inducted Jim Johnson as our newest club member. In addition she honored Floyd Nordström with the 2026 District 5000 Spirit Award and Bev Fraser with the 2026 District 5000 Rotary Foundation Award. Our guest speaker was Kate Sims from the West Hawai’i Mediation Center whose mission is to help people resolve conflict.

Nick Los Banos from the Alzheimer’s Association gave us a very good update during our breakfast meeting today on the latest information about initial diagnosis and treatment of dementia related diseases including Alzheimer’s. He also emphasized the ten healthy habits we all can be doing to lessen aging impacts with our brain health.

Club member Barbara Kossow announced memorial salutes during today’s West Hawai’i Veterans Cemetery Memorial Day program. Club President Nancy Lowrey presented a floral arrangement from the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise at the proposed Medal of Honor monument. Hawai’i Mayor Kimo Alameda was also the guest speaker.

Jill Wagner from the Joseph Rock Arboretum updated our club this morning on their dry-land forest preservation efforts here on Hawai’i Island.

During this morning’s breakfast meeting, President Nancy Lowrey presented club member Marcia Rogers with a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris pin. Jeff Bray also gave us an update on the the “Million Gallons of Day” (MGD) Kona Water project being proposed to use deep ocean water desalination technologies off the Kona coast.
