What a beautiful Saturday in Kailua-Kona! 🌺 Our F.O.L.K. volunteers had so much fun marching in the annual King Kamehameha Day Parade, carrying our banner and passing out bookmarks for our upcoming book sales. The crowd's reaction to our library volunteers absolutely warmed our hearts! 📚❤️

Come join us for this month’s book sale! 📚 The sale features Hawaiiana, Special Collections, LPs, non-fiction, paperback trades, and YA & children’s books. Tables of books will be set up in the Lobby AND Adult Room. All proceeds support the activities and programs presented at the libraries in Kealakekua and Kailua-Kona.

Starting Monday, May 4th, FEMA representatives will be available right here at the Kealakekua branch of the Hawai‘i State Public Library System to answer your questions and provide face-to-face assistance.

📍 Location: Hawai‘i State Public Library System, 81-6619 Hawaiʻi Belt Rd, Kealakekua

📅 Dates: Monday, May 4 – Friday, June 12

⏰ Hours:
• Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays: 9 a.m. - noon, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
• Wednesdays: noon - 2 p.m., 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
• Fridays: noon - 4 p.m.

Our next Friends of the Libraries, Kona book sale is coming up at the Kailua-Kona Library.

Join us on Friday, April 17 from 11am–3pm and Saturday, April 18 from 9am–12pm.

This month features 2 tables of Science Fiction & Fantasy books, plus Hawaiiana, Collectibles, Non-Fiction, Paperback Fiction, Children’s books, and jigsaw puzzles.

Most books are just $2 and all proceeds support the libraries of Kailua-Kona and Kealakekua.

F.O.L.K. is proud to help sponsor “In Language There Is Life: Poetry Workshop with Travis Kaululāʻau Thompson” at Kailua-Kona Public Library on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 2:30–3:30 PM.

This interactive workshop invites participants to explore identity, healing, and connection through storytelling and creative writing in a welcoming, supportive space. No prior poetry experience is needed, brand-new writers are welcome. Pens and notebooks will be provided.

The workshop is open to all ages. Come write, reflect, and share in community.

Travis Kaululāʻau Thompson is a poet and teaching artist with the Youth Poet Laureate program in Hawaiʻi, supporting young people to find their voice through poetry. Since 2003, he has been part of Hawaiʻi’s spoken word movement as a co-founder of Youth Speaks Hawaiʻi and a director with Pacific Tongues. He has performed on stages ranging from Lahainaluna High School to the Nuyorican Poets Café, and has taught in classrooms, juvenile detention centers, and cultural institutions across the islands. Through this work, he brings a deep commitment to storytelling, youth voice, and community healing.
