Pacific Bird Conservation

Pacific Bird Conservation The MAC project was initiated by DFW, in cooperation with USFWS and AZA, as a response to the threat of the Brown Treesnake in the CNMI.

Specifically it was developed to identify and implement conservation actions necessary to ensure the persistence of CNMI's avifauna. The establishment of the Brown Treesnake on Saipan, and the increased threat of the species establishment on the islands of Rota and Tinian, serves as a direct threat to the survival of many of the CNMI's endemic and rare bird species. The MAC project is intended to

provide the avifauna of the Mariana archipelago with the best possible chances for long-term survival, with the objectives of preserving, maintaining, and establishing self-sustaining populations of native, free flying birds secure from the threat of the Brown Tree-snake.

Last month we co-hosted the first Nosa' Luta Conservation Planning Workshop on Luta, bringing together partners from across the islands and beyond.

Workshops like this are an essential step in ensuring a future for the species of the Marianas and strengthening community-driven conservation.

We’re excited to continue this important work with our dedicated partners and looking forward to the next workshop in 2026!

We are grateful to be recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) by receiving the North American Conservation Award for our decades long work in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

We are thankful to all of our CNMI and AZA partner organizations that have collaborated on this program for over 30 years.

Follow along with us this week as we work with a wonderful group of stakeholders on the conservation planning of the Nosa' Luta (Rota white-eye).

Our hope is that this collaborative process sets the stage for long-term, collective stewardship and that by working together across disciplines and sectors, we foster a deep sense of ownership and shared responsibility for the future of this species.

Over the next week, we'll listen, ask questions, explore risks and opportunities, and work together to imagine what a successful future looks like for the species and for the people who live alongside it.

Stay tuned!

At Pacific Bird Conservation, we’re dedicated to ensuring a future for birds of the Pacific region through expert-led translocation efforts. With years of experience in safe bird collection, mist netting, specialized husbandry, and data collection, our team supports species survival from field to flight. We collaborate with local communities and conservation organizations, centering their leadership and knowledge, while supporting their efforts with resources, technical expertise from AZA-accredited partners, and capacity-building tools to protect native species for generations to come.

By carefully supporting avian translocations and building assurance populations, we help safeguard species against extinction. Together, we can make a difference for avian conservation.
