Join us for the Jackson City Council Special Hearing and make your voice heard. Data centers bring serious concerns about environmental impact, energy consumption, water usage, and the long-term well-being of our neighborhoods. Our community deserves transparency, accountability, and a seat at the table before decisions are made.

Coming in hot! Energy we’re bringing into summer 26’
Mississippi Freedom Summer was all about young people showing up, speaking out, and fighting for change and over 60 years later we’re bringing that same energy. During Mississippi Freedom Summer in 1964, more than 1,000 volunteers joined local civil rights activists to help register black voters across the state. Although Black people made up nearly half of Mississippi’s population, only a small percentage were registered to vote because of discriminatory laws and violence.
Freedom Summer organizers also established more than 40 freedom schools where thousands of Black students learned about history, leadership, and civic engagement. The movement brought national attention to the fight for voting rights especially after the murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner.
More than 60 years later, we honor the courage of those who fought for change in Mississippi. Their legacy and the Freedom Summer Movement reminds us that when people come together, they can make history.

This summer, twenty high school and college students joined Mississippi for a Just World’s Human Rights Fellowship. Throughout the program, fellows have engaged with leaders and organizations working for justice and human rights, including a conversation with Representative Justin Jones and a visit to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The fellows are helping develop a Human Rights Scorecard and studying youth activism movements from Mississippi to Palestine. Their experiences include a tour of the Mississippi Delta, a visit to Tougaloo College, and upcoming trips to Equal Justice Initiative and the Legacy Museum. As a final project, fellows will interview youth activists and contribute to documenting the stories and impact of young organizers across Mississippi, helping preserve an important record of youth-led activism in the state.

Mississippi for a Just World is powered by community. This June, support our work by making a one-time or monthly donation. This work is only possible because of your support!

Since our beginning as Mississippians for Palestine in 2023, this movement has grown from grassroots organizing for a ceasefire into a statewide human rights organization rooted in Mississippi’s enduring legacy of resistance, courage, and collective action.

Your donation directly supports:
✊🏾 Direct Action: Rapid response, direct actions, and organizing across the state.

📢 Global Solidarity: Build a statewide movement connecting Mississippi to Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Haiti, and all those who are fighting for freedom.

🧡 Education: Support our youth internships and fellowships that train the next generation of organizers, researchers, advocates, and movement leaders.

🔎 Legislative Transparency: Launch LobbyWatch Mississippi, a statewide database tracking all lobbying, campaign finance, and money influence on Mississippi politicians.

🏛️ People Over Politics: Grow our civic education program that helps everyday Mississippians understand the legislative process, demand transparency, and hold elected officials accountable

🎤 Voices for a Just World: Bring internationally renowned scholars and human rights leaders to Jackson for community education and dialogue.

⚖️ Keep Building: Build toward future initiatives like the North Star Legal Collective, the Statewide Human Rights Assessment, the MSJW Human Rights Institute, the Truth Teller Network, and so much more.

Every donation, no matter the size, helps us organize, educate, protect, and build.

Redistricting shapes who has political power, how communities are represented, and whether every vote has an equal chance to be heard. Understanding the Voting Rights Act and the redistricting process is essential to protecting fair representation for all.

That’s why we’ve compiled a few resources to help you learn more about voting rights, redistricting, and the fight against gerrymandering.

Last Saturday, we had a full house for our VRA edition of People Over Politics at the Biloxi Public Library! We enjoyed engaging with everyone and breaking down the history of the Voting Rights Act, how it has been weakened over time, and why protecting voting rights remains as important as ever.
