Polly has been returned. Her updated picture is in the comments. She’s been renamed Polly once again!

Polly is all ears! She is a great listener and will make a wonderful family pet. She is a 4 month old German Shepherd. She was brought to us when someone found her dumped in their yard. She is super friendly and already making friends in our puppy room. We recommend a fenced in backyard at her new, loving home. Her adoption fee is only $125, which includes her age appropriate shots and her spay surgery.

Meet three little terrier girls who are looking for patient homes and a fresh start.

Belle is the tan and white Terrier mix. At just 2 months old, she is shy at first but very sweet, enjoys being held, and gets along well with other dogs.

Bonnie is the scruffy black, white, and tan Schnauzer mix. She is around 3 to 4 months old, good with kids, good with other dogs, and just needs a little time to build confidence. She was adopted, but returned because she wasn’t as high energy as expected.

YNT, short for “You Name Them,” is Bonnie’s sister and the darker Schnauzer mix. She was adopted and later returned because she struggled to fit in with the household. She needs a patient family willing to let her settle in and learn that people can be trusted.

One thing all three girls have in common is that terrier type dogs are incredibly smart. They like to think for themselves, learn quickly, and often have a little independent streak. With patience, consistency, and positive training, they make wonderful companions.

These girls can be adopted separately, Bonnie and YNT can be adopted together, or someone can give all three a home. They are shy right now, but every day they become a little braver, and we would love to see them spending tonight in homes instead of kennels.

Belle’s adoption fee is $130. Bonnie’s adoption fee is $130. YNT’s adoption fee is $130.

If you have been looking for a sweet little terrier to grow with your family, come meet these girls. Sometimes the shy ones end up being the most rewarding companions of all!

Sometimes the perfect adoption day is not about finding one puppy, it is about finding two. Friends Sholomon Manning and Austin Mccalpin, from Florence, Mississippi, came to MARL looking for companions and left with two new best friends. Sholomon adopted Cheyenne, a Husky mix puppy, while Austin adopted Foreign, an Aussie mix puppy. These two serve in the military and live active lifestyles, making them a great fit for energetic young dogs. They spent time getting to know the puppies, asked great questions, and showed a genuine desire to learn about their new companions and their breed traits.

Austin is a first time dog owner, but he has a great mentor in Sholomon, who already has experience with pets. The puppies are also joining a home with two cats, so life is about to get a lot more fun. Before heading home, they picked out a bandana for Foreign and a coat for Cheyenne, making sure both pups left with a little something special of their own. With acreage to run and explore, Cheyenne and Foreign are headed to a wonderful home filled with friendship, adventure, and plenty of opportunities to be dogs. Thank you, Sholomon and Austin, for choosing to adopt from MARL and giving these puppies the future they deserve!

*ADOPTED*

Lhasa Apsos were originally bred to be watchdogs in Tibetan monasteries, and they still take that job seriously today. They’re known for being loyal, intelligent, alert, and full of personality despite their small size.

Meet Gator, a 4-5 year old Lhasa Apso mix who came to MARL as a stray. He’s a very sweet and playful little guy who loves attention, enjoys treats, and is always ready to see what’s going on around him.

We can’t decide if Gator looks more like a tiny gentleman, an Ewok, or a dog who knows all your secrets and isn’t telling. Either way, that face is hard to forget.

Gator is available for adoption now for just $130, which includes his neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and more.

If interested in meeting Gator, please fill out an adoption application or come visit him at MARL. (5221 Greenway Drive Ext, Jackson MS)

It has been a while since our shelter cats, Jack and Jill had a little Facebook time. They strolled back to our administration offices a few days ago to visit. Jack was focused on the chair he likes to nap in but Jill beat him to the spot. He tried to stretch out but it just was not working for him and she was not moving. Jack moved to another office and of course Jill got down then. She can be a hateful little sister. Jill was looking a little bored so we pulled up the swimming fish game on the computer and that entertained Jill for about 5 minutes. They have the run of the entire shelter and if you visit you may find them on the adoption counter, resting on one of the benches we have for customers or asleep on their big floor pillow with a fleece blanket. They sleep through barking dogs, excited voices of the children, customers standing near their lobby bed while shopping for toys for a dog or cat. If not in administration or the lobby, they will be in our animal intake area stretching out on our operations manager's desk while he is trying sort his paperwork on new arrivals. They have a bed under his intake desk as well. Also a spot in the staff kitchen where their food and water is located. They sometimes hop on the table in the laundry and grooming room and help is not welcomed when someone is trying to fold towels. In the back hallway they have a small cat tree, window level and watch some of the big dogs. That is across from their own bathroom where their litter box is located. It use to be the girls room for staff but not so much now. They may circle up the central hallway leading to the public area of the shelter. We usually have a cage or two of guinea pigs or rabbits waiting for adoption in that area and they may stop and watch for a few minutes but never bother them. So if you visit MARL and see a large black cat and a bossy tortishell girl loose, they have the run of the place and sometimes act like they are in charge .
