In April, the CDF Capital board of directors met in Southern California and joined our team for our monthly chapel service. Our Chairman of the board, Ken Thompson, shared a devotional that has stayed with us since.

Ken told the story of arriving in Grand Cayman after a devastating hurricane. Buildings were demolished. But the palm trees were still standing, bent by the storm but not broken.

That image became a word for everyone in the room: we may bend. But we do not break.

Ken has been married for forty years to his wife, Pat. They have four kids, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Wherever life took them, they always connected with the local church. We at CDF are grateful for directors like Ken who provide financial, strategic, and spiritual guidance to our ministry.

Convenience and vulnerability have never lived closer together than they do on your smartphone.

In minutes, you can check your bank balance, transfer funds, or review your investment account from anywhere. That kind of access changes things, including the risks.

At CDF Capital, we believe wise digital stewardship is part of protecting what God has entrusted to you. The tools change, but the principle doesn't.

Use only official apps. If you didn't search for it yourself, don't trust it. A link sent via text or in an email is never the safest way to access your financial account. Always download financial apps directly from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Secure your device. If your phone is ever lost, stolen, or left unattended, a strong passcode, Face ID, or fingerprint login adds a first layer of protection. It's also wise to enable auto-lock so your phone doesn't stay unlocked longer than necessary.

Keep your software updated. Updates often fix known security vulnerabilities. An outdated app is like an unlocked window into your phone.

Monitor your accounts. Most banking and investment apps allow you to set up automatic notifications when there's activity in your account. These alerts won't prevent fraud, but they can help you catch suspicious activity sooner.

Somewhere this summer, a pastor is standing in a brand new space.

The construction crews are gone. The chairs are set. Volunteers are hanging decorations for Vacation Bible School. Kids are about to fill hallways that didn't exist last summer.

And in a few days, families will walk through those doors for the very first time.

We pray for that moment. We pray for the VBS week that draws kids from the whole community. We pray for the summer camps, the community events, and the Sunday mornings that will happen in spaces that were only a vision not long ago. And we are grateful to play even a small part in making it possible.

In seven years, Community Christian Church's congregation has more than doubled. Over 600 people have been baptized.

After the sprint from Christmas to Easter to Mother’s Day, the summer months can bring moments of slower rhythms in ministry. So now is a good time to pause and ask an honest question: has the pace of the past six months taken a toll on your family, too?

Even family members who aren't on staff can carry the weight of ministry life. Here are four ways it can happen without you realizing it.

1. The need to be perfect. Your family can pick up the unspoken expectation that they need to appear flawless, your spouse most of all. Have regular, open conversations to help them reject that unnecessary burden.

2. Your constant absence. The expectations placed on clergy can be rough and might keep pastors away from home day and night. If that's become the case, sit down with your loved ones to create a family schedule that's sacred, and prioritize that time.

3. Being forced into ministry positions. You are on the church's payroll, not your family. Be an advocate for them when other staff or church members voice the assumption that your spouse or children can or should take on church responsibilities simply because of their relationship to you.

4. Carrying your ministry burden. Many pastors don't have a lot of close friends to talk to about their frustrations, and those feelings get brought home. Be mindful of how you talk about people in the congregation around your family, especially your children.

It's an honor to be called to vocational ministry. As a pastor, you're shepherding a flock that, on some level, includes your family. Aim to protect their hearts, too.

In 1970, First Christian Church in Newbury Park needed a financial partner willing to see beyond a $40,000 property purchase to the Kingdom work it would support. CDF Capital said yes.

And we’ve kept saying yes.

When the first building was needed in 1973, CDF Capital was there. When growth demanded a new auditorium in 1995, CDF Capital financed it. When the Family Life Center was built in 2004, CDF Capital was there again.

In 2025, First Christian Church celebrated their 60th anniversary and paid off their CDF Capital mortgage. Then they redirected that former payment into a vision fund to help staff afford housing, plant churches in Southern California, and launch a ministry residency program.
