We’re proud to share that Salida del Sol received the Innovative Housing Award at the Affordable Housing Awards Breakfast! 🏆

Co-hosted by OCCHC/SteppingUP, Kennedy Commission, and Affordable Housing Clearinghouse, the event celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, bringing together leaders and advocates dedicated to expanding affordable housing across Orange County.

Located on a portion of the City of San Juan Capistrano - Public Agency former civic center site, Salida del Sol provides 40 affordable homes for formerly homeless households and veterans and 9 homes for individuals earning up to 50% AMI. Designed around a large open courtyard, the community was developed alongside the city's new City Hall, which was also designed and built by Jamboree.

This recognition highlights the impact of innovative partnerships and thoughtful design in creating affordable housing opportunities for those who need them most.

Iluma hosted its first clothing boutique, and it was a success! All items were generously donated by our team and were in great condition, offering a wide variety of clothing, accessories, and shoes. The excitement and appreciation from our residents truly made the day special.

This boutique is just the first of many pop-up events we plan to host as we continue supporting our residents and helping ease financial stress. The idea was developed as a team, grounded in the understanding that confidence and well-being are closely connected to how people feel about themselves. When individuals feel supported, have access to essentials, and are surrounded by a strong sense of community, it builds self-confidence and stability.

This initiative reflects our belief that our residents deserve to feel seen, valued, and heard. By providing essential clothing at no cost, we aim to reduce financial strain while reinforcing dignity, connection, and a sense of belonging within the community.

Franz Washington’s life has been shaped by resilience—and the choices he’s made. A former star athlete and Marine Corps veteran (1979–1983), he once had structure and purpose. But after losing his job, he spent nearly two years homeless across Orange County, working when he could while battling alcoholism.

Even while employed in warehouses and aerospace, Franz was sleeping behind a Walmart. “I used to think I’d die on the streets,” he said. “Today, I wake up knowing I have a future.” Exhaustion and addiction took their toll—until he chose to seek help. A short detox stay became a turning point, connecting him to Estrella Springs, a permanent supportive housing community in Santa Ana.

Now housed for over a year, Franz says that stability has changed everything. Before, each day was about survival. Today, he describes something he hadn’t felt in years: peace. “Living here has brought me peace… I can sleep at night, finally.” With a stable home, he’s maintained over a year of sobriety, improved his health, and rebuilt his sense of purpose.

Permanent supportive housing gave him more than a roof—it gave him a foundation. “I’m able to go to my AA meetings… look for work… go to my peer counselor classes. I can do those things now because I have this home.”

He’s since completed Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Training and is preparing for certification, with plans to volunteer at the VA hospital. “Now my mission is to serve others,” he said.

“Sobriety gave me clarity. Housing gave me stability. Together, they gave me hope.”
