Founded in August 2025, we create welcoming spaces where gardening is for everyone; no matter space, budget, age or experience. The Common Soil Collective cultivates thriving garden and green spaces through hands-on horticulture, education and community care nurturing both plants and peop

le for a stronger, healthier future. We are proud to be rooted in Ironton, Ohio and just like a healthy garden, our branches reach into surrounding communities to grow together!

It’s been another good week around Common Soil. ❤️

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Rotary Club of Ironton to our Community Garden for a tour; and what was supposed to be a little tour may have turned into over an hour of us dragging everyone from bed to bed telling ALL the stories! 🥹🌱

We talked about how Common Soil began, the community members and volunteers who have helped this garden grow, our free seed library, educational programs, Open Door Sprouts, community partnerships, shared resources, environmental stewardship and why making gardening accessible to everyone matters so much to us!

And honestly, it was one of those afternoons that reminded us exactly why we do this. The garden was beautiful, the butterflies showed OFF and we were able to share not just what we grow; but the people and stories behind it. 🦋

A huge THANK YOU to the Ironton Rotary Club for spending the afternoon with us, for listening to our stories, and most importantly; for the many ways you continue to serve and invest in our community. We loved having you in the garden! ❤️

🐅⚽️ AND THIS WEEKEND, IT’S OUR TURN TO SHOW UP FOR SOMEONE ELSE!

This Saturday, Common Soil is headed to The Tank to cheer on the Ironton High School Boys Soccer at 7:30pm!

These young men showed UP for our Community Garden this summer. They hauled, shoveled, worked beds and helped us get this space ready to grow.

And if you’ve driven past the garden lately and thought, “GOODNESS, LOOK AT THAT CORN!” These kids helped make that happen! 🌽

Community isn’t just about people showing up for us; it’s about showing up for each other. So we’re trading our garden gloves for orange and black and heading to The Tank to return a little bit of the love they gave our garden this summer. 🧡🖤

Come out, grab some concession stand nachos, enjoy a late summer evening and help us CHEER ON THE TIGERS! 🐅⚽️🌱

Because whether we’re growing gardens, growing kids or growing community…we’re better when we’re Rooted Together! ❤️🌱

🪴PULL UP A POT THURSDAY🪴
The Case of the Bindweed (aka: Murder Vine ) 🕵🏼‍♀️

Let’s talk about the part of gardening nobody puts on the pretty seed packets. Our community garden has a problem. A bindweed problem. And this stuff does NOT understand boundaries! 😂

It climbs, it tangles, it spreads underground and if you pull it without a solid plan, it has approximately 67 ways to come back and personally offend you.

So what are we doing about it?

We’re getting ready for winter and taking this opportunity to reset our beds as much as we can. That means:

🌿 Removing as much bindweed as possible; roots and all. NOT tilling! Bindweed spreads through underground rhizomes or roots. Tilling chops those roots into a bunch of pieces and each little piece can potentially produce a new plant!
🌿 Clearing out spent plants and weeds.
🌿 Deadheading and cleaning up our flower beds.
🌿 Saving seeds from the plants we actually want to reproduce! 😂
🌿 Planting a few fall crops.
🌿 Adding our fall/winter cover crop where appropriate; we are thinking oats! 🌾
🌿 And getting those beds tucked in for the colder months!

We’re not expecting perfection. Gardening is a process, and sometimes the process is just standing in a garden holding a fistful of murder vine wondering how the heck it got THAT big! 😂

But that’s one of the things we love about the community garden: we learn by doing. We try things, we make mistakes, we figure out what works and we keep growing. 🌱

Our goal this fall isn’t to make everything picture perfect. It’s to leave the garden healthier, more manageable and ready to come roaring back next spring! 🌱🍂

🌱 WHAT’S GROWING MONDAY 🌱

We’re starting this week with some dirty hands, some Tiger pride and a little Plant Bingo business. 😂❤️

First up; a HUGE thank you to everyone who showed up for our Community Garden tidy-up yesterday! It was an absolutely beautiful day to get our hands dirty and our garden got some love. Whether you weeded, deadheaded, saved seeds, planted, hauled things around or just stopped by to say hello; thank you! This garden belongs to our community and there is something pretty special about watching people show up and care for it together!❤️

⚽️ THIS WEEK, WE’RE TRADING OUR GARDEN GLOVES FOR TIGER GEAR!

Saturday at 7:30pm Common Soil is headed to The Tank to cheer on the Ironton High School Boys Soccer! 🐅⚽️

These kids worked HARD with us in the garden this summer and now we can’t wait to return the favor and show up for them on the field! If you’re free Saturday evening, come help us cheer them on! 🖤

PULL UP A POT THURSDAY! 🪴

Grab a pot and settle in friends because summer gardening isn’t the end of gardening season! 🍂🌱

While some of our summer plants are starting to look a little tired (and honestly, same 😂); late summer is the perfect time to start thinking about your fall garden.

Cooler temperatures can mean happier greens, fewer heat-stressed plants, and a whole new round of things to grow. Depending on the crop and timing, you can tuck in things like:

🥬 Lettuce & other leafy greens
🌱Spinach
🫜Radishes
🥦 Broccoli
🥬 Kale
🌿 Cilantro
🧅 Green onions
🥕 Carrots
🫛 Peas

And fall gardening isn’t only about planting!

This is also a GREAT time to start seed saving from some of your favorite flowers and vegetables, deadhead spent blooms, clean up tired plants, keep harvesting what’s still producing and take a few notes about what worked; or absolutely did NOT work; so future you remembers next spring! 😂

One important tip: don’t rip everything out just because it looks a little messy! Seed heads from flowers like sunflowers, coneflowers and other garden favorites can provide food for birds, while stems and plant material can offer habitat for beneficial insects through the colder months. A garden doesn’t have to be perfectly tidy to be doing important work! 🐝🐦❤️

🌱 ROOTED TOGETHER WEDNESDAY 🌱

This week we’re showing some love to one of our favorite local places to wander around saying, “Ohhhh I absolutely need that!” 😂❤️

We’re talking about Cardinal Wishes Antiques and the wonderful Patricia Coleman!

Patricia is one of those people who makes supporting local VERY easy. She’s kind, fun, endlessly supportive of her community and she just so happens to own an antique store packed with treasures!🥰

And listen… gardeners AND antique stores are a dangerous combination! We have found PLENTY of goodies at Cardinal Wishes that immediately became plant vessels because around here if it can hold dirt, there is at least a 93% chance we’re putting a plant in it! Sometimes the best way to learn about nature is simply to slow down and look a little closer.

The next time you visit the Community Garden, grab our FREE Pollinator Scavenger Hunt and see how many treasures you can find! 🐝🦋🐦

Can you spot:
🌻 A flower bigger than your hand?
🐝 A busy bee?
🦋 A butterfly or moth?
🌾 A seed head that will feed the birds?
🌽 Our handsome community corn? (Don’t forget to tell it how good it’s looking! 😉)

🌱⚽ Rooted Together Wednesday ⚽🌱

This week’s Rooted Together Wednesday is dedicated to the Ironton High School Boys Soccer team!🧡🖤

As they kick off another exciting season, we want to wish every player, coach and family the very best! We hope this season is filled with teamwork, determination, growth and plenty of wins!

But before they took the field, these young men showed up for our community gardens in a big way!

Back in the spring, the team spent hours helping prepare our Community Garden. They hauled soil, cleared beds, weeded and tackled some seriously hard work without complaint. Quite simply… we could not have gotten the garden ready without them!

And that beautiful massive bed of corn everyone has been stopping to admire? It wouldn’t exist without their help. Those first big jobs laid the foundation for everything that’s growing today. 🌽

That’s what Rooted Together is all about; neighbors helping neighbors, young people investing in their community and discovering that something beautiful grows when we work together.

Now it’s our turn to show up for them!

🥬Lettuce Introduce Ourselves Tuesday! 🥬

This week we’re excited to introduce one of our favorite people…Patricia! 💚

While Patricia may tell you she doesn’t have a green thumb, she’s proof that you don’t have to be an expert gardener to be an important part of The Common Soil Collective! Every community garden needs people with different talents and Patricia brings plenty of her own!

She’s our resident tarot reader, antique dealer, small business owner and one of the kindest souls you’ll ever meet. She’s always willing to lend a hand, never hesitates to volunteer and if you went to our bingo fundraiser…you already know she can sling a mean bingo card! 😂

We asked Patricia: What made you join The Common Soil Collective?
“I joined because I’m curious about plants and flowers, but I do not have a green thumb at all!! But I do enjoy them all!”

If you could grow any plant, flower, herb or tree, what would it be?
“I think I would love to grow a Mimosa tree. It reminds me of growing up, and the smell when it blooms is amazing. Someone should make that a perfume!” 💕

(And honestly…we’d buy that perfume too!😂)

We’re so thankful Patricia is part of our garden family. She reminds us that Common Soil isn’t just about growing plants; it’s about growing friendships, sharing talents and building a community where everyone belongs!
