Tomorrow's the day.

Our Student Nurses Association hosts the American Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Riffe Center Rotunda, 1804 Liberty Ave., Ironton. Bring a photo ID or donor card.

One donation can help up to three people, and the hospitals it reaches are the ones our neighbors go to. Our nursing students have organized five of these now, and the last one brought in a record 49 donations.

Appointments help us plan, but walk-ins are always welcome. If you have an hour tomorrow, we'd love to see you.

As a thank you, everyone who gives blood, platelets or AB Elite plasma Sept. 1-20 receives a Red Cross x Hello Kitty plush mascot clip and sticker pack while supplies last.

There's room in your fall schedule for one more credit, and this one doesn't meet in a classroom.

OHIO Southern is offering two recreation courses this fall. In Day Hiking (REC 1001), you'll learn how to plan a trip, pick the right gear, navigate, treat water and stay safe out there. In Fundamentals of Canoeing (REC 1130), you'll learn to handle a canoe on gentle rivers, lakes and calm water.

You don't need any experience. That's the point of both courses.

They're one credit each, they count toward the OHIO BRICKS Bridge: Learning and Doing requirement.

Dr. Orianna Carter came back to college as a single mother, working as an herbalist and gathering medicinals from the woods around her home to keep her children healthy. She wanted to understand how those plants actually worked. That question turned into a career in education that's now more than 25 years long.

She'll share her story at the next I AM... Speaker Series session at Ohio University Southern.

The I AM... series gives people from campus and the community a chance to tell their own stories in their own words. Each session includes a presentation and time for questions, built on the idea that understanding starts when people actually hear from one another.

Teachers, this one is for your juniors.

Constitution Day at Ohio University Southern brings the founding document to life through keynote presentations, small-group activities and a student-led mock trial. Students dig into separation of powers, federalism and the Bill of Rights, and they leave understanding the Constitution as something that still shapes their daily lives.

Thursday, Sept. 17
Ohio University Southern, Ironton

The program is free to participating schools, and every student takes home a copy of the Constitution. It ties directly to America 250, the national commemoration of the country's 250th anniversary, and is supported by local educators, community leaders and America 250 Lawrence County.

New this year: a writing contest for juniors across the tri-state, with a $250 prize for the winning essay. Students connect an Article or Amendment to a current event, a personal experience and a civic issue in their own community.

That was Welcome Week.

Directions to class in the courtyard. Giant Jenga between classes. Origami bobcats turning up in the strangest places. A rotunda full of people who want to help you get where you're going... And a WHOLE LOT of green and white.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, set up, tabled, played, hunted and said hello. And to our newest Bobcats, welcome. You picked a good place to land.

Look who tracked down a bobcat.

Origami bobcats have been hiding around campus all week, and these Bobcats found theirs and traded them in at the Library for a prize pack. Nice work, all of you.

Thank you to everyone who joined in this week, whether you were hunting bobcats, stopping by the Welcome Stations, playing a round of giant Jenga in the courtyard or just saying hello on your way to class. It has been a good week to have everyone back.

Happy OHIO Spirit Day, Bobcats.

Green and white are out in force today, and the Office of Student Services in the Collins Building is open until 5 p.m. with snacks and a place to sit down.

Two faces worth knowing are in there. Success Advisor Christina Baker and Regional Recruitment Manager Tyler Grubbs are both starting their first semester back on the Southern campus, and both of them work with students every day. Christina helps you stay on track once you're here. Tyler helps you get here in the first place, walking students through admission to Ohio University.

First week of classes is in the books. Come say hello before you head out.
