On Nov 4, 2025, Indy DPW provided Google Maps a full update to the city's greenways, multi-use trails, and bike routes. Six months later those corrections and updates have not been incorporated. Google Maps still shows bike lanes on dangerous roads like S Holt Rd, and will route folks onto these roads that do not have a bike lane, and often don't even have a shoulder or sidewalk.
We've documented many Indy bike route errors in Google Maps over the past year. The known longstanding errors are putting folks at risk - routing them onto dangerous roads that do not have safe cycling facilities. In addition to the official communication of bike route corrections, images and reports of the errors have been shared with Google over both social media and their internal Google Maps reporting tool.
This is why we recommend that folks use other tools for planning a bike route. Ride with GPS, Bike Streets, Strava, and OpenStreetMap have better bike route data. If there isn't a bike route where you're going, Ride With GPS and Strava both offer heat maps to show where others have been riding. Bike Streets provides routes that others have identified as comfortable and safer for biking, whether or not they have a bike lane or side path - including many neighborhood streets.
