Our support group has a rare opportunity to help with some important research! A new blood test for Celiac Disease is being developed right here in Indianapolis and the company developing the test, Glutenostics, has contacted us to ask for local volunteers who can provide blood samples.
This new test would be a major advance because, in most cases, it should be able to diagnose Celiac Disease without a biopsy. And for those already on the gluten-free diet, it will be able to diagnose CD with no gluten challenge - or only a very short one.
They need adult volunteers who have the most common gene for Celiac Disease, which is HLA DQ2.5, and who have also had an intestinal biopsy. It does not matter whether the biopsy was positive or negative, in fact, they need to compare the two groups. Since most people don't know their HLA type, Glutenostics will do the HLA test by cheek swab as part of their pre-screening process.
They will probably need blood donations in early January. They do need a larger sample than the usual blood test. It could be anywhere from about 1/3 the amount you would normally give in a blood donation (with perhaps 2 or 3 donations over time at their lab, Xeno Diagnostics), or a full unit which would be taken at a local blood bank.
If you think you might be able to participate, even if you are not sure and have questions, please email Katherine Wilson at Glutenostics for more information: [email protected]
Thank you for your help with this important research!
