By adopting a compassion based approach by officers and utilizing a community wide continuum of care philosophy, Decatur County CIT has not only reduced the amount of individuals in crisis taken to the emergency room or placed into the justice system, but has markedly reduced the recidivism rate in their county. Presently, there are more than 26,000 people incarcerated within the Indiana Department of Correction; many of whom are living with a mental health condition.
