"Giving Up Billionaires for Lent”
A discussion with Sister Emily TeKolste
This week’s episode of the We Can Do Better podcast spotlights a conversation with Sister Emily TeKolste, an organizer with NETWORK Advocates for Catholic Social Justice and NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice.
Sister Emily shares her path into activism and service that led her to become a Sister of Providence and an economic justice organizer. She explains how “Giving Up Billionaires for Lent” is part of a campaign that connects multi-faith principles to direct advocacy with lawmakers—a strategy central to the abolition movement, the civil rights movement, and the fight to create and protect the Affordable Care Act.
We also hear how contemporary organizing can borrow tactics from other movements, which have long fostered activism by prioritizing relationships and community. That insight has inspired Sister Emily and her peers to cultivate “squad goals” as they push for higher wages, paid family leave, and universal healthcare.
