WVAR and the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter are hiring. Starting at $10/hour.

You'll walk dogs, socialize animals, help keep their spaces clean, and get them adopted. Thousands of animals come through our doors every year. The people who show up for them matter.

What we're looking for: reliable, drama-free animal lovers who have their own transportation and can work weekends and Mondays.

This is a place of second chances, for the animals and for the people who show up for them. No one will ever appreciate you quite like a dog whose life you just saved.

You probably have these three ingredients in your pantry right now, but they are incredibly dangerous for your dogs and cats!

Xylitol: This artificial sweetener is frequently found in sugar-free gum, mints, dental products, and occasionally peanut butter. It is sometimes listed as birch sugar. In dogs, even a tiny amount can cause a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and severe liver damage. Always check the ingredient list on the jar before sharing peanut butter with your dog.

Onions and Garlic: Whether raw, cooked, or dried into a powder, everything in the onion family is toxic to dogs and cats. These plants destroy red blood cells, leading to a dangerous condition called anemia. Because the symptoms often take three to five days to develop, you might not notice anything is wrong until days after they sneak a snack.

Grapes and Raisins: These can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs. Some dogs can eat them and seem fine, while others can suffer severe toxicity from a single raisin. Because there is no predictable safe amount, treat every single exposure as an emergency.

If your pet eats any of these items, do not wait for them to get sick before you act. Call your veterinarian immediately or reach the ASPCA Animal Poison Control team at 888-426-4435.

Before you take your dog for a walk this summer, do your pup a favor: put the back of your hand flat on the sidewalk for 5 seconds.

If you can't hold it there, your dog shouldn't be walking on it. When it's 90°F outside, asphalt can hit 150°F. Dog paw pads can blister from burns in under a minute on pavement that hot.

Early morning and after sunset are your best windows for safe summer walks, and so are grassy areas, which are always cooler than pavement.

If your dog starts lifting their paws, limping, or goes after their feet right after a walk, take a look at those pads. Red, raw, or blistered skin means a vet call.

Around 60% of cats in the US are clinically overweight or obese.

Even more surprising is that most cat parents have no idea. Because cats carry weight evenly and often have thick fur, it is incredibly easy to miss the extra pounds. In major health surveys, a significant portion of owners called their overweight cat a normal weight.

But those extra pounds matter. Feline obesity raises the risk for type 2 diabetes, chronic arthritis, urinary tract problems, and an overall shorter lifespan.

You can check your cat's body condition score at home with two easy steps. First, gently press their sides. If you cannot feel their ribs without pressing hard, they are holding extra fat. Second, look down at them from above while they are standing. They should have a noticeable curve inward at the waist.

If your cat is looking a bit more round than contoured, ask your vet at your next visit if their weight should be a concern.
