ANNIE UPDATE ❤️‍🩹

This was Annie yesterday, waiting for the ER to open.

Today, she is hospitalized on IV fluids, supplements and IV antibiotics. She is anemic, and her doctors are closely monitoring her to determine whether she will need a blood transfusion.

As desperately as you want to look at a dog this thin and simply give her all the food she wants, that could actually kill her.

The veterinarian has carefully calculated Annie’s nutritional needs, and she is being fed small amounts every two hours to prevent refeeding syndrome. In a dog who has been severely starved or malnourished, introducing too much food too quickly can cause dangerous shifts in phosphorus, potassium and magnesium—potentially leading to heart problems, seizures and even death. Her little body has to be nourished very slowly and very carefully.

Late last night, my phone rang and I saw it was the ER. My heart dropped. I feared the worst.

Thankfully, they were calling for permission to give Annie a Cytopoint injection. Her skin was so red, inflamed and painful that she was biting at herself and crying out in pain. Of course, we immediately approved it.

Annie was absolutely infested with fleas and ticks when she arrived, undoubtedly contributing to how miserable she has been feeling on top of everything else her body is fighting.

She will remain hospitalized at the ER throughout the weekend. They will continue her IV fluids, antibiotics and supplements, carefully follow her feeding plan, treat her painful skin and closely monitor her anemia and whether a blood transfusion becomes necessary.

There is still a long road ahead.

But Annie doesn’t have to walk it alone.

We are her people now. ❤️

She may have spent far too long without someone making sure she was fed, comfortable and cared for, but those days are over. From here forward, she has all of us.

We don’t yet know what her final ER bill will be—or what additional treatment she will need once she is stable enough to leave—but we have promised Annie that we will give her every chance we can.

Annie Stayed. Now She Needs Us. ❤️

Her name is Annie. ❤️‍🩹

Today, dispatch called Animal Control to a home in rural Kentucky. Annie was there with her owner, who had passed away.

We don’t know how long she had been there alone.

We don’t know how long it has been since Annie had enough to eat. We don’t know if her owner had been ill and unable to care for her for some time. We don’t know how long her little body has been struggling.

There are so many things about Annie’s story we will never know.

But we know this: she stayed.

This sweet, loyal girl stayed with the person she loved until there was no one left to care for her.

And when you look at her, it breaks your heart.

Annie is severely emaciated. Most of her fur is gone. Her skin is thick, leathery, raw and painful. Her frail body is covered in fleas and ticks, and her nails are terribly overgrown. Her body tells a story that she cannot.

There was no question about what needed to happen next. Annie is going directly to the emergency hospital. Her medical care cannot wait.

She needs bloodwork and diagnostic testing to determine what is happening inside a body that has gone without proper nutrition and care for far too long. She will need IV fluids, supplements, treatment for her skin and whatever else the doctors discover. We expect her to remain hospitalized through the weekend and, if she is stable enough, continue her care at Ashland Animal Clinic on Monday.

We don’t yet know how sick Annie is. We don’t know how long her recovery will take or what her medical care will cost.

But Annie has spent enough time alone.

She will not be alone anymore.

Tonight, for the first time in who knows how long, someone will be watching over her. Her needs will be tended to carefully. Her pain will be addressed. Gentle hands will touch her, and she will begin to learn that there are people here now who care what happens to her.

Annie gave her loyalty and love to her person until the very end. Now she has been left behind in this world, and she needs all of us to be her people.

Please help us give this sweet girl everything she needs to heal. We don’t know what lies ahead for Annie, but we know we will give her every chance we possibly can.

Every donation, every prayer and every share will help us provide the medical care Annie desperately needs and surround her with the love she has gone without for far too long.

The Federation of Humane Organizations of WV calculated that there are about 118,000 community cats in WV, with 98% of those being unaltered.

Bien and Izquierda are two do those someone luckily seen and took to the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter. The medical team did one eye removal each and I found rescue from them.

Vetting isn’t cheap so we’re asking for your help to cover these two guy ls, including vaccines, Dewormer, flea medication, Neuter, Rabies vaccine and eye removal 🐾

Can we help cover the rest? 🐈

If you’ve been involved with community cats in our area, there’s a good chance you know Nancy Simmons. Nancy is truly a one-woman cat-trapping phenom who has helped thousands of cats over the years.

When One By One was just getting started and money was tight, Nancy even used some of her own grant funding to help us spay and neuter cats. And to this day, when someone calls us about a feral colony, we know we can call Nancy—and she will help without hesitation.

This time, Nancy called us.

She was asked to trap a colony of cats in Ohio, where the West Virginia spay/neuter grant funding available to both Nancy and One By One cannot be used. She asked if we could cover the veterinary expenses, and we said yes.

Nancy will do the hard part: drive to the colony, set and monitor traps, return to collect the cats, transport them to the clinic, and then make the trip again to safely release them back into their familiar territory.

We just need to help pay the bill.

Each cat will receive spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, pain medication, a first vaccine to help protect against illness, and flea preventative.

Nancy has spent years answering the call when cats needed her—and she rarely asks for anything in return. This time, we’re asking our supporters to help us answer the call for her.

🎉🐾 CELEBRATING 8 YEARS OF COURTNEY! 🐾🎉

On Friday, One By One Animal Advocates surprised Courtney Proctor Cross with a celebration honoring her eight-year anniversary as Executive Director of the Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Shelter. ❤️

And somehow, despite all the people involved, food arriving, donations being collected and even news cameras showing up — we actually managed to keep it a surprise!

Courtney walked into the shelter break room filled with shelter employees, friends, family, community supporters and special guests and initially didn’t realize everyone was there for her. It wasn’t until someone called out “Happy 8-year anniversary!” that it finally clicked.

WHY EIGHT YEARS WAS WORTH CELEBRATING 🐾

Eight years ago, Courtney stepped into leadership at HCWAS and began a chapter that has fundamentally changed what is possible for the animals who enter its doors.

Today, HCWAS is saving lives at an extraordinary scale, maintaining a 95% live-release rate while caring for hundreds of animals at any given time. Every animal who comes through the doors is met with more than just shelter — they are given medical care when needed, opportunities for rehabilitation and enrichment, and access to foster and rescue pathways that open the door to a second chance.

A major part of that success has been Courtney’s belief that no shelter can do this work alone. Over the years, she has built and strengthened a wide network of rescue partners, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, volunteers, advocates, and community supporters across the region and beyond.

One By One Animal Advocates is proud to be one of those partners, working alongside HCWAS to help expand medical care, support fosters, coordinate transports, and connect animals with rescue opportunities whenever possible.

It is not easy work. There are hard days, heartbreaking cases, and constant pressure. But through it all, Courtney continues to show up, problem-solve, and keep pushing forward for the animals who depend on her leadership.

That is why we wanted eight years to be more than another date on the calendar. We wanted Courtney to see, in one room, just how many people appreciate what she has built and believe in the work still ahead. ❤️

Huntington City Council members Sarah Walling and Holly Smith Mount made the celebration even more meaningful by presenting an official proclamation recognizing Courtney’s eight years of leadership and the positive transformation of HCWAS during her tenure.

Then came another surprise…

What began as an idea from One By One to recognize Courtney quickly grew as businesses, friends and community members stepped forward to participate. Together, private donations and a contribution from One By One Animal Advocates allowed us to present $15,000 to support the shelter and continue the lifesaving work Courtney has spent eight years championing.

$80,000 for the Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Shelter — $10,000 in honor of each of Courtney’s eight years as Executive Director.

Because ultimately, this celebration isn’t about a number.

It is about recognizing what eight years of determined, compassionate leadership can mean to a shelter, a community and thousands upon thousands of animals.

Courtney, thank you for eight years of answering the phone, finding another kennel, calling another rescue, seeking another medical option, solving another impossible problem and continuing to believe there is always one more animal worth helping.

Laramie found himself at an overcrowded shelter, where a black dog can easily be overlooked—especially one with a cherry eye requiring surgery. 💔

In hopes of securing rescue for this handsome boy, One By One offered to cover his vetting, neuter, cherry eye surgery and the medication he needs after testing positive for Lyme disease.

$200 is a small price to give Laramie the chance he deserves—and to help clear a desperately needed space at the shelter for another animal in need.
