These are calls between One By One and the veterinary ER last night. Behind those calls was an injured animal who needed someone to say, “Yes, we will help.”
By this morning, the calls continued with Ashland Animal Clinic and Proctorville Animal Clinic, coordinating care for three animals who need orthopedic surgery today.
Three animals hit by cars. Three broken bodies. More than $5,000 in expenses for these three alone.
All were found on the streets with no one there to assume responsibility for their care.
🩷 Otis, the three-month-old puppy abandoned at the ER, is having surgery at Ashland Animal Clinic today. He needs a femoral head ostectomy—a procedure to remove the damaged ball of his hip joint.
🩷 Cricket, a six-week-old kitten also hit by a car, is having surgery at Ashland today to place a pin in a broken femur. Such a tiny baby to be facing so much.
🩷 Jovi was hit on Third Avenue in Huntington in the middle of the night. She is at Proctorville Animal Clinic with a broken leg. After operating on Otis and Cricket, Dr. Pinkston will travel to Proctorville to perform her surgery this afternoon.
Before these surgeries, there were already emergency bills, hospital care, X-rays, bloodwork, pain medication, fluids, and antibiotics.
We usually share one animal’s story at a time. Each deserves your attention, and we know it can be overwhelming to see so many animals needing help. But today, we need to let you see a little more of what we are carrying.
We are also covering safe boarding for three dogs while their owner, a domestic violence survivor, finds safety for herself. Their identities and location will remain confidential.
Three other dogs needed emergency vetting and are now in paid boarding after living on a property where a home burned down. Four more there still need our help, including one returning to the vet today for treatment of an infection.
Yesterday, Sugar, a mother of six puppies, became so ill she could barely lift her head. She needed urgent treatment for mastitis. Thankfully, she was able to return to her babies.
Between the calls and medical decisions, we are still gathering information, photos, and videos for tomorrow’s rescue transport, working to get more animals to safety and covering the vetting they need to go.
We are an all-volunteer rescue. This work happens alongside our jobs, our families, and the everyday responsibilities that do not stop when the phone rings.
We love these animals. We want to keep being there when they need us. But we cannot sustain this level of care without financial help.
