Yesterday young people took a stand. Huntington High School students walked out in opposition to ICE’s increased presence, the murder of Renée Good, and the agency’s brutality across the nation. We applaud each and every student for speaking up and demanding change. Together, young people have the power to make a lasting impact.

Huntington High School students will be walking out this Friday from 9:45 to 10:05 in opposition to ICE’s increased presence in Huntington, the murder of Renée Good, and other acts of the organization’s brutality across the country. As students, we will not stand by while communities are threatened and dehumanized. We are standing up and making our voices heard.

This student-led event is only open to current Huntington High School Students and is not a school-sponsored event. Participants must remain orderly and peaceful.

2025 was nothing short of incredible. Sunrise Huntington emerged as a leading force in our city, and while we took a brief pause over the past few months, we are now hyper-focused on making 2026 our most impactful year yet.

This group was founded on a multitude of missions: to inspire young people to hold elected officials accountable, to educate our community about the real impacts policy has on our environment, and to lead the fight to change the trajectory of our neighborhoods, our country, and our planet for the better.

We remain deeply committed to making each of these goals a reality.

Finally, we want to thank everyone who has collaborated with us, attended our events, and contributed to this movement in any way. In times like these, we need each other more than ever. Spark conversations with your neighbors. Rally behind people running for office. Run for office yourself. Be kind to yourself, your environment, and your community. And always remember: we have far more in common with someone who may vote differently than us than we ever will with the billionaire class determined to make life harder for working people and to destroy our environment.

Zohran Mamdani’s win is a huge moment for our movement.

Members of Sunrise Huntington volunteered on his campaign because we believe in the kind of politics he stands for: one that centers working people, fights for justice, and challenges systems of power.

Here in West Virginia, young people see themselves in this victory. High school and college students across our state are realizing that organizing works, that democratic socialism can deliver real change, and that our voices matter in building a better future for everyone.

Thank you to the West Virginia Citizen Action Group for hosting a Community Air Monitoring Training with Sunrise Huntington! We discussed expanding air monitoring devices throughout the Greater Huntington area.

With the continuous data these monitors collect, we’ll be able to detect when the air we breathe becomes unhealthy or hazardous. This allows us to hold polluters accountable and demand action when something as basic as clean air is not being provided to West Virginians.

If you or someone you know is interested in hosting an air monitor at your home or business, please reach out via DM. Together, we can ensure that every West Virginian has access to clean, safe air.

REMINDER: Tonight Sunrise Movement Huntington will be co-hosting a community air monitoring training. The training will run from 6-7 pm in the Memorial Student Center room 2W22. We will dive into the current state of air monitoring in West Virginia, anticipated sources of pollution, and provide training on the installation of Purple Air Monitors. Opportunities for community installation to follow the training.

Sunrise Huntington is excited to announce our second Huntington City Mission cleanup! We had a fantastic turnout last spring, and we're looking forward to seeing everyone once again. The Huntington City Mission provides essential resources and support to the homeless population in Huntington, and it's up to us to help out our environment and those in need. We can't wait to see you there.

What happened in Utah this afternoon was more than an attack on one person. It was more than an attack on a particular ideology. It was an attack on democracy itself and the most fundamental values this nation was founded on.

This was the 45th school shooting in the U.S. this year. As young people, we should not have to go to school in fear. We should not have to fear for our lives when we speak up.

We cannot allow fear and violence to dictate our politics. We need common sense gun control, a politics that focuses on our similarities rather than our differences, and a culture that rejects violence, no matter who it is against.

Huntington City Councilman Jason Arthur has recently sponsored a resolution calling for a city-funded investigation into Councilwoman Ally Layman’s residency. This resolution stems from the fact Ally occasionally spends the night at her fiancé’s home, which is just a few miles outside the city limits. However, Ally lives in Huntington, owns a home in the city, and has dedicated her life to advocating for and uplifting the Huntington community.

Councilwoman Layman has consistently been an ally to Sunrise Movement Huntington and all of her constituents. Whether she is standing with us at protests, picking up litter around our city, or actively listening to our voices as young people, she has shown unwavering support for Huntington.

This politically motivated stunt by Jason Arthur and other council members reveals their true priorities are not to uplift our community or serve the public but instead to silence and attack anyone who opposes their far-right agenda. Our city cannot afford to waste resources on a conspiracy. We have potholes to fill, an animal shelter to fund, and many other pressing needs to address.

Join us this Monday in solidarity with Councilwoman Layman at the city council meeting. Huntington residents can sign up to speak and voice their opposition to Jason Arthur’s fiscally irresponsible and politically motivated resolution. Let your voice be heard!

Thank you, Senator Bernie Sanders, for coming to West Virginia to stand with working people when our own representatives refuse to listen.

West Virginia has become a Republican stronghold not because our people are conservative at heart, but because too many Democrats stopped listening, stopped showing up, and stopped fighting for us, the working class. Bernie is changing that by bringing a message that puts the working class first and reminds us that we deserve leaders who care.
