What a day. 🥹 The Rhythm & Roots Brunch was everything we dreamed of and more. A room full of soul, purpose, and community coming together to honor our heritage and celebrate our future. 🌿

We are proud to honor Mark Jacobs at the Rhythm & Roots Brunch! 🌿

A respected banker and civic leader, Mark is the President, Founder, and Board Member of Houston Bank & Trust. He earned his BBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Arlington and his MBA from Butler University and has spent his career pairing financial excellence with a deep commitment to service. 🙌🏾

His leadership runs straight through the heart of our organization: Mark served as Board Member and Chairperson of the Houston Area Urban League from 2018–2025, and today serves on the Board of the National Urban League and its Council of Board Chairs. 💫

From the Greater Houston Port Bureau to the Houston Rodeo, the First Tee, and beyond, his decades of civic leadership, and honors like the Pi Kappa Phi Lifetime Service Award reflect a life devoted to strengthening community and opening doors for others. ✊🏾

A shining star on the jazz horizon, Stephen is known for his clean, soulful styling and dazzling solo flourishes. Raised in Houston on everything from classical piano to soul, jazz, R&B, and the blues, he's shared the stage with legends like Boney James, Hubert Laws, Norman Brown, and Grover Washington Jr. 🙌🏾

Now leading his own band with 14 albums to his name, his latest release Purple Sax II hit #1 on South Africa's Jazz Charts, and he's bringing that magic straight to us. 💫

A proud Prairie View A&M alumna and former Charles Gilpin Player, Mecca has performed at venues and poetry clubs from Houston and Galveston to New Orleans and Colorado Springs. She's been featured twice in Voyage Houston, is credited in the films Addiction and Unspoken Words, and creates the Pinto Beanz N Cake podcast while co-hosting the internet radio show Brown Sugar Xpress w/ Raine & Meschét. 🙌🏾

With a BBA, an MBA, and a DBA in progress, Mecca brings brilliance to every stage she touches — and she's bringing it to ours. 💫

Houston, meet Mak Peace, The Soulo Poet, taking the stage at the Rhythm & Roots Brunch! 🌿

Mak's spoken word weaves together faith, healing, resilience, and hope. Drawing from his own journey of recovery and restoration, he uses poetry to remind us that even life's deepest trials can become testimonies of purpose. 🙌🏾

Off the stage, he pours into others as a Program Manager for Peer Services at The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD and as a Peer Coach, helping people find their voice, embrace recovery, and stay rooted in what truly matters. 💫
