On this day in Vermont's history: the state officially adopted its third (and current) flag in 1903: a blue banner with the Vermont Coat of Arms in the center. The pine tree in the center represents Vermont's forests, the cow and wheat represent the state's agriculture heritage, and the deer head on top represents the state's wildlife. The banner at the bottom proclaims the state's motto: "Freedom and Unity".

As we continue to document America 250 with our collection, we take a look at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. After 1778, the British focused more of their efforts in the South. In part, they suffered more defeats in the mid-Atlantic and New England states, but also, conquering the wealthiest state, South Carolina, would be a boon to the British war funds.
