LGBT Council on Aging

LGBT Council on Aging Our equality and Sensitivity trainings bring forward topics within our LGBT community that most institutions do not realize have an impact on our LGBT Seniors.

What we do:

We provide equality and sensitivity training for organizations, healthcare facilities, housing institutions and companies that serve the LGBT community. We provide one on one crisis management for our seniors that feel they are being targeted by their lifestyle. From there we will request the company, organization or institution to participate in our Equality and Sensitivity training

to broaden their views of LGBT Seniors and the impact they have within our community. We have developed scorecards for any business that works within or for LGBT Seniors. From these scorecards, we will further help develop internal practices, polices and procedures to be more inclusive to the quality and equality of life and respect to all. Do we offer a membership program for a cost of $20. If you are interested please contact Bob Kalin [email protected]

"Don’t just assume your older client is straight. The intersection of discrimination experienced by older adults and ageism can be profound. In fact, studies show that many older LGBTQ adults fear having to re-closet themselves when moving into a long-term care community. When the time does come to move, many choose to hide their s*xual orientation. The experience of transgender older adults is even more dire, with studies showing that many older transgender folks prefer death by su***de to moving into a long-term care community," writes Dr. Regina Koepp. "Once, in the span of six weeks, two older adults married to spouses of the opposite s*x, with whom I’d been working in individual psychotherapy to manage their depression and anxiety, revealed to me that they’d had same-s*x relationships earlier in their lives. While they loved their spouses, they feared their lives would end without experiencing that kind of deeper love again. We spent several sessions processing the suffering that LGBTQ-phobia had caused them, grieving the missed opportunities it had meant for them, and creating a space where they could be seen and valued for who they are. As therapists, it’s on us to help to repair some of the damage that has been done to LGBTQ folks excluded from communities, then and now."
