Teach For America Houston

Teach For America Houston One day, all children will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

For the past thirty years, Teach For America has worked to find, develop, and support a diverse network of leaders who expand opportunity for children in classrooms, schools, and every sector and field that shapes the broader systems in which schools operate in Houston. In order to accomplish our mission of seeing that one day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an exc

ellent education, we recruit outstanding and diverse leaders who have demonstrated evidence of the values and leadership necessary to expand opportunity and access for all children inside and outside of the classroom. We ask leaders to make a lifelong commitment that begins with two years teaching in a public school, partnering with children and families most acutely impacted by educational inequity.

In Episode 2 of our podcast, Unlearning: Using AI to Solve School-Based Problems, educators reflect on what they learned over the course of the year while building their own AI-powered tools to address real challenges in their classrooms. Teachers share how stepping into the role of “builder first” deepened their understanding of AI, strengthened their instructional practices, and created more meaningful learning experiences for students. The episode also explores how this work has helped students become more thoughtful, responsible users of AI in the classroom and beyond.

Jasmine Fusilier-Jeffires believes that for students to become responsible users of AI, teachers must first become builders and innovators themselves. Throughout the past year, she has encouraged corps members to take risks, lean into their expertise as educators, and explore how AI can support teaching and learning in meaningful ways.

Jasmine's cohort of mostly first and second year teachers are designing AI tools to tackle challenges they experience every day like chronic absenteeism, family engagement, differentiation, and creating more accessible learning experiences for students.

At this weekend’s AI Showcase, teachers demonstrated what they built and shared how the process actually gave them time back, deepened their understanding of content, and sparked new ideas for student engagement.

The showcase demonstrated that when teachers have the tools and support to innovate, they can make the work more sustainable and better suited to the needs of students, families, and school communities.

Thank you to ConocoPhillips for making Teacher Appreciation Week extra special for our corps members by providing tickets to the Astros game! With end-of-year testing and the close of the school year in full swing, the game was a wonderful opportunity for our corps members to unwind, recharge, and enjoy time together cheering on the Astros. With a 4–1 win over the Rangers, it was the perfect night.

Thank you again, ConocoPhillips, for your support of our corps members and the important work they do every day.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support of the CenterPoint Energy Foundation for Teach For America Houston as we work to expand access to high-quality STEM education for students across our city.

“By investing in the recruitment and training of new teachers, we’re not only empowering the next generation of educators but also helping to open doors for students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. This partnership is a meaningful step forward in advancing our education pillar, fostering a robust STEM workforce, and fueling the future of Houston.” - Alicia Dixon, Director of Community Relations, CenterPoint Energy

Thank you, CenterPoint Energy Foundation, for your partnership and shared commitment in building stronger communities through education.

The Houston East End Chamber of Commerce Education Symposium was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when communities come together for students.

Teach For America Houston was proud to sponsor the event alongside EMERGE and Math Circles of Houston as we celebrated students, educators, and community leaders creating opportunity across Houston.

Our Executive Director, Tiffany Cuellar Needham, was honored to introduce keynote speaker Elisa Villanueva Beard, CEO of the Houston Endowment, whose leadership and commitment to opportunity continue to inspire communities across Houston.

Perhaps the most moving part of the day was seeing so many high school seniors recognized as they pursue their college dreams. At least 10 of the scholarship recipients were also members of EMERGE Fellowship. In the audience was also the older brother of one of the recipients, himself an EMERGE fellow, a recent graduate of The University of Texas at Austin (Hook ’em), and a member of the 2026 Teach For America Houston corps.

That’s the full-circle nature of Teach For America’s work. We enlist some of our nation’s most promising young people to serve in classrooms today, and over time, we see those same leaders shaping careers, communities, and systems in pursuit of opportunity for all kids.

Thank you to the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce team for an inspiring day.
