When it comes to mental health, there is a difference between talking about people’s needs and listening to the people who experience it firsthand. Their experiences can help us better understand the barriers to care, challenge assumptions, and recognize what meaningful support actually looks like.

Connecting people to care is about more than finding a provider. It’s about recognizing that each person brings their own circumstances, needs, and experiences into the process of seeking support.

Care Connect helps make that possible by connecting people with mental health providers and resources that fit their needs, because finding the right support starts with understanding the person seeking it. Follow the link to get started on your mental health journey today --> careconnecttx.org

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re making space for the many stories, traditions, and experiences that make up Hispanic/Latine communities.

For some, culture can be a source of connection, belonging, and strength. For others, navigating family expectations, identity, language, or different generational values can bring complicated feelings — and sometimes, it can be hard to talk about them.

Whatever your experience looks like, your mental health matters.

Taking care of yourself can look different for everyone: setting a boundary, talking with someone you trust, making time for what brings you joy, or reaching out for support when you need it.

There’s no one way to experience culture, family, or mental health. This month, we’re honoring the individuality within our communities and the importance of making space for every experience.

✨ Team MHA Runner Spotlight ✨

Meet Marcus, who is taking on his first marathon with Team MHA! We asked him what inspires him to run and the meaning behind his miles.

"Running started as survival, not a hobby. I laced up recreationally for the first time in January 2026 because anxiety and CPTSD had made my own head a hard place to live. I didn't start running to get fast, I started because I needed somewhere for all of it to go.
It works, but only alongside real treatment. Running didn't cure anything. Paired with consistent therapy, it gave me something therapy alone couldn't: proof, in miles, that I could do hard things I once believed were impossible. Movement and professional care do different jobs, and both have helped me greatly.
In January, I'm running my first marathon. 26.2 miles, less than a year after my first mile — a distance that would have been unthinkable for the version of me who started this.
Not everyone gets the door I got. I was lucky enough to find a therapist. Many Houstonians aren't. MHA of Greater Houston connects people to quality care, equips communities with education and training, and advocates for legislative solutions — the part of my recovery I couldn't have built on my own.
This is a Houston problem, and a Houston organization. MHA of Greater Houston has served this community since 1954, working across schools, integrated health care, veterans, and community education. Every dollar stays here.
Your donation does something specific. $100 can make a life-saving su***de prevention or mental health training available to our community. $250 can fund four months of peer-to-peer mentorship for a justice-involved veteran. You're funding a training, a mentorship, a connection to care.
Saying it out loud is part of the point. Naming CPTSD and anxiety publicly is uncomfortable. I'm doing it anyway, because silence is what keeps people from asking for help. If one person reads this and calls a therapist, that matters more to me than my finish time."

Mental Health America of Greater Houston mourns the loss of former State Representative Garnet Coleman, a tireless champion for health, justice, and the people of Texas.

For decades, Representative Coleman worked to expand access to health care and mental health services and to strengthen the systems that support people and communities. He was part of a pivotal shift in the Texas House toward understanding mental health not as an issue that exists in isolation, but as one deeply connected to health care, education, justice, public safety, and community well-being.

MHA of Greater Houston was proud to work alongside Representative Coleman on legislation to transform mental health access and strengthen the systems supporting Texas children and families. He championed legislation ensuring teachers received appropriate training to recognize and respond to the emotional trauma and behavioral health needs of students, and he was a joint author of the legislation that created the Collaborative Task Force on Public School Mental Health Services, which studied and evaluated school-based mental health supports across Texas. He continued that work through legislation strengthening school mental health accountability and supports for young people.

We are grateful to have had a champion like Garnet Coleman fighting against stigma and for a Texas where mental health care is accessible, systems work together, and every person has the opportunity to thrive.

Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, colleagues, and the many communities he served. His legacy will live on in the laws he helped shape, the systems he helped strengthen, and the people whose lives are better because he chose to serve.

✨ Team MHA Member Spotlight ✨

Meet Odalis, another of our Team MHA members! We asked what inspires her to run and the meaning behind her miles.

“Running started as a way to challenge myself, but over time it became a way to manage my anxiety and quiet my overthinking. After struggling with my mental health for years, I know how important access to support and resources can be. That’s why I’m running my first half marathon and supporting Mental Health America of Greater Houston.”

✨ Team MHA Runner Spotlight ✨

Meet Cesar, who is taking on his first marathon with Team MHA! We asked him what inspires him to run and the meaning behind his miles.

“I’m running this marathon because mental health has touched my life in ways I can’t ignore. I’ve struggled with my own mental health, and I’ve also watched people close to me struggle with theirs.
I know how difficult it can be to carry things that others may never see, and how important it is to have support and remind people that they’re not alone.
What makes this journey even more meaningful is that I had never run before. Signing up for a marathon was a challenge I never imagined taking on, but I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone and use this journey to better my own mental and physical health.
I’m running for those who have struggled in silence, for the people still fighting, for the people I love, and for those we’ve lost. Every mile is a reminder that progress happens one step at a time and that even when the journey is difficult, we can keep moving forward.“
