We do this by providing funding for education, housing, and health and wellness. Founded in 2006 by Patrice Pike & Todd Young.

The Step Onward Foundation breaks the cycle of homelessness for young adults and for families who are at risk of homelessness due to their children’s health crises. About Us

Our Mission at the Step Onward Foundation is to break the cycle of homelessness by providing education, communication, housing, wellness resources and mentorship to young adult survivors of childhood homelessness. Toward this end we cultivate strategic partnerships with likeminded organizations in the communities we serve. Our Vision is to help create a world where young adults who were homeless are understood and assisted through an effective and compassionate model. Our support is an investment in the lives of each young person we serve, providing resources that help them reach their full potential as healthy, happy and self-sufficient adults.

Step Onward is participating in Amplify Home, a 10-day giving campaign supporting Central Texas nonprofits working in housing, shelter and homelessness.

Through Oct. 10, every qualifying gift of $5 or more can unlock an additional $50 in matching funds while funds last. It takes 500 gifts to unlock the full $25,000 match.

48 hours.

When an eviction is days away, help that arrives three weeks from now isn’t help.

That’s why Step Onward is built to move quickly.

When a family is referred to us in an urgent situation, requests are generally reviewed and approved within 48 hours, with payments made immediately upon approval.

There are no weeks of waiting while a family falls further behind.

Because by the time a hospital social worker reaches out to Step Onward, the clock may already be ticking. A parent may have missed weeks of work caring for a seriously ill child. Rent may already be overdue. An eviction may be approaching.

Early intervention only works if it happens early enough.

For families in crisis, 48 hours can make all the difference.

At Love Is Home, one of the most moving parts of the night came when former Step Onward recipient Alasha Bunton took the stage to share what can happen when someone steps in at the moment when you need it most.

Years ago, Step Onward was there for Alasha during a difficult chapter in her life. Today, she has built a successful career in real estate and returned to share her story with the community that once helped her.

Her story is a reminder that the support Step Onward provides isn’t only about getting through a crisis. It’s about creating the stability and breathing room someone needs to keep moving forward.

We were so grateful to have Alasha back with us at Love Is Home, this time not as someone needing a hand, but as someone showing us just how far that hand can help someone go. 💛

That’s the average amount it takes for Step Onward to help keep a family facing a child’s medical crisis housed and stable.

For a family in crisis, that support can mean the difference between losing their home and having the breathing room to recover.

And the impact lasts.

90% of the families we support remain housed a year later.

That’s what early intervention can do. A relatively small amount of assistance, provided at exactly the right moment, can change the trajectory of a family in crisis.

The paddles are down, and the music is over (for now). But this is where the real work begins.

Every gift made at Love Is Home helps Step Onward respond when a family or young adult reaches a moment when one unexpected crisis could change everything.

It means rent is paid for a struggling parent caring for a seriously ill child. A young adult who has experienced homelessness, housing instability or foster care can stay in school without having to wonder where they’ll sleep tonight.

That’s what everyone in this room was raising a paddle for.

And now, we get to put that generosity to work. 💛

Sunday night, we celebrated what’s possible when a community comes together to help families stay housed.

For many of the families Step Onward serves, the path toward housing instability begins with a medical crisis.

A child is hospitalized. A parent misses work to stay by their side. Their paycheck gets smaller. The rent does not.

This is the moment Step Onward is built for.

We work with hospital social workers and other trusted partners to identify families in crisis and provide rapid financial assistance and personalized support before a temporary setback becomes something much harder to recover from.

Because sometimes preventing homelessness starts with helping a family through one difficult month.

And Sunday night, our community made it possible for us to be there when that moment comes. 💛

What a night. 💛

Last night, our community came together for the 2026 Love Is Home Gala, and we’re still taking it all in.

A room filled with friends, partners, families and supporters. Stories that reminded us why this work matters. And an incredible outpouring of generosity for families and young adults facing some of life’s hardest moments.

We’re still tallying the final numbers, but we already know this: Love Is Home raised more than $216,000 to help keep families housed and help young adults build more stable futures.

To everyone who joined us, sponsored the evening, raised a paddle, bid, volunteered, donated or helped bring Love Is Home to life: thank you.

We’ll be sharing more from this special night in the days ahead. For now, we’re simply grateful.
