Voting: It's Your Right!

Every voice matters, and everyone deserves access to information that helps them understand their voting rights.

The Boggs Center on Disability and Human Development has released the 7th Edition of Voting: It's Your Right, a guide designed to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities better understand voting rights and the voting process in New Jersey.

Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, this resource covers:

• Registering and preparing to vote

• Voting by mail and in person

• Voting rights and accessibility

• Contacting election officials for assistance

Developed in collaboration with Disability Rights New Jersey and the NJ Council on Developmental Disabilities, the guide is available in English and Spanish.

Understanding Eye Health and Keratoconus in Down Syndrome

Good vision plays an important role in confidence, independence, and overall quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome.

Join the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) for a FREE webinar on Tuesday, November 3, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Eye conditions are common among individuals with Down syndrome, yet symptoms can sometimes go unnoticed or be mistaken for developmental or behavioral changes.

This physician-led webinar will explore the importance of routine eye care, common treatable eye conditions, and keratoconus, a condition that can lead to significant vision loss if not detected early.

Designed for self-advocates, families, and caregivers, the session will highlight warning signs, early screening, and practical ways to protect lifelong eye health.

Trick-or-Treating for Children with Autism

Children with autism may face sensory sensitivities (itchy costumes, loud noises, flashing lights), social interaction difficulties (saying “trick-or-treat” to strangers), routine changes, dietary restrictions, and safety concerns such as crowded streets or crossing roads. Below are some quick & helpful tips that can help make the holiday fun for all.

Preparation Strategies:
Use visual supports such as a button or card labeled “Trick-or-Treat (treat cards linked below!)
Practice trick-or-treating at home with your child first
Choose comfortable costumes and avoid restrictive masks
Plan out the route and timing for the night
Adapt to your child’s preferences so they can participate with comfort and ease

Sensory and Safety Tools:
Noise-canceling headphones or fidgets to manage overstimulation
Bring a sensory toolkit with comfort items
Decide in advance how many houses you will visit or how long you will stay out
Avoid busy or consider indoor activities (as needed)

World Stroke Day | October 29
Every second counts when it comes to recognizing the signs of a stroke.

Observed annually on October 29, World Stroke Day raises awareness about stroke prevention, early detection, treatment, and support for survivors.

Knowing the warning signs can save lives. Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.:

• B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance

• E – Eyes: Sudden vision changes

• F – Face: Facial drooping

• A – Arms: Arm weakness

• S – Speech: Difficulty speaking

• T – Time: Call 911 immediately.

October is ADHD Awareness Month!

Awareness begins with understanding, and understanding helps create more inclusive and supportive communities.

Observed every October, ADHD Awareness Month raises awareness about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), promotes education, and encourages greater understanding and acceptance of individuals living with ADHD.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect attention, organization, impulse control, and activity levels. With appropriate support, understanding, and resources, individuals with ADHD can thrive at school, work, and in their communities.

How Can You Support ADHD Awareness?

• Share educational resources and reliable information about ADHD.

• Encourage open conversations that help reduce stigma and misconceptions.

• Participate in awareness events, webinars, and community initiatives.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the talents, contributions, and opportunities of workers with disabilities.

Here's what you should know:

• The annual ABLE contribution limit for 2026 is $20,000, but eligible working account owners may contribute additional funds through ABLE to Work.
