Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month,a time to increase understanding of spinal cord injuries, promote accessibility and inclusion, support continued research, and recognize the resilience and achievements of people living with SCI.

Approximately 18,000 new spinal cord injuries occur annually in the United States, and more than 300,000 Americans are currently living with an SCI.

The NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities Presents: Swimming and Water Safety Awareness

Swimming and other water activities can provide enjoyment, exercise, and valuable social opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Adults with IDD can face an increased risk around water, making active supervision, preparation, and consistent safety practices especially important. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, but many water-related incidents can be prevented through proper awareness and precautions.

The New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities has prepared a Swimming & Water Safety Awareness Prevention Bulletin with helpful information and practical safety tips.

Accessible Parking: Pushing Beyond Minimum Requirements to Meet Today’s Demand

Join the ADA National Network for a free webinar exploring accessible parking requirements and potential solutions to the nationwide shortage of accessible spaces.

The session will review current minimum design requirements and discuss possible improvements at the state and local levels, including increasing the number of accessible spaces, strengthening public education and improving enforcement.

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey (BIANJ) is hosting its 39th Annual Sun and Fun Beach Day on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the 12th Street beach in Ocean City, NJ.

The event includes beach access via ramp, umbrellas and surf chairs, refreshments, beach bites, and a day of fun by the shore.

Participants are encouraged to bring beach chairs, towels or blankets, sunscreen, and anything else needed for a comfortable day at the beach.

Back to School Resources Supporting Children with Disabilities

It’s back-to-school season! The start of a new school year can bring excitement, but for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities, preparing for school often includes much more than supply lists and first-day nerves.

Families may be reviewing IEPs or 504 plans, confirming that services and accommodations are in place, preparing children for changes in routine, and getting ready to work with a new school team.

August is Don't Be a Bully Month

Individuals with disabilities, particularly children, are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing bullying, with research indicating that 36% of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) face frequent bullying compared to 25% of their peers.

Research shows that disabled young people and those with SEN are disproportionately affected by bullying. They are more likely to experience various forms of bullying, including physical, verbal, and online harassment. For instance, children with learning disabilities and autism are particularly vulnerable, facing bullying at rates much higher than their non-disabled peers.
