Listening without judgment, believing their experience, and allowing them to share at their own pace can make a meaningful difference.

You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes, simply saying, "I believe you, and I'm here for you," can help someone feel heard and supported.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CARA invites the community to gather for a Candlelight Vigil honoring survivors, remembering those impacted by domestic violence, and raising awareness through strength, healing, and unity.

The evening will include a candlelight vigil ceremony, a Survivor T-Shirt Display, and an opportunity to create empowerment stones with messages of support for survivors.

The time following sexual violence can feel confusing or overwhelming. Survivors may experience numbness, sadness, anger, shock, anxiety, guilt or many other emotions. There is no single “right” way to react.

Survivors have choices. They may decide to:

• Speak with a confidential advocate
• Seek medical care
• Explore reporting options
• Receive counseling or emotional support
• Create a safety plan
• Take time before deciding what to do next

The survivor controls which steps to take and when to take them. Sexual violence is never the survivor’s fault. Nothing they did or did not do caused the assault.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, you are not alone. CARA provides free, confidential support.

Financial abuse is a form of domestic violence that uses money, employment, credit or access to basic resources to control another person.

It may include:

• Preventing someone from working or causing them to lose a job
• Controlling all household money and spending
• Denying access to bank accounts
• Withholding money for food, medicine or other necessities
• Running up debt or opening accounts in someone else’s name
• Stealing money, property or an inheritance
• Forcing someone to work without pay
• Damaging their credit or filing false insurance claims

Financial abuse can make it difficult for a survivor to leave or rebuild independently. CARA’s Financial Empowerment Program provides free and confidential support, including budgeting assistance, resource referrals, credit counseling, financial goal setting and employment support.

Know your rights.

If you are experiencing domestic violence and the person causing harm has access to a fi***rm, has threatened to obtain one or has threatened you or someone you love, help and legal protections may be available.

You may be able to:

• Seek assistance and develop a safety plan
• Apply for a temporary or emergency restraining order
• Ask the court to prohibit the person from possessing or obtaining fi***rms
• Seek additional assistance if a protective order is not being followed

CARA can help you understand your options and connect you with confidential support. New Jersey also allows eligible family or household members to request an Extreme Risk Protective Order when someone with access to fi***rms presents an immediate threat.

Listen without judgment. Remind them that the abuse is not their fault. Avoid pressuring them to leave, report or make decisions before they are ready. Ask what support would be most helpful.
