Cape May County Zoo AAZK Chapter

Cape May County Zoo AAZK Chapter We are a chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers consisting of staff members at the Cape May County Zoo.

Our chapter is made up of zoo keepers from the Cape May County Zoo. We put on events to raise money to provide enrichment items for our animals (like the toys you see in their exhibits) and to give donations to other organizations that are important in animal conservation. We also send our zookeepers to conferences in order to further their education so that we may provide the best possible care to our animals!

Thank you to Kaitlyn & Steve Hyland for purchasing the new DVD player for the lions! Did you know: Keepers put on movies for the big cats when they are locked in their dens during severe weather. This great visual enrichment includes cartoons and nature videos. BONUS: Kaityln and Steve also donated some Gatorade to help get the keepers through the rest of this hot weather! 🥵

Happy National Wildlife Day! 🌿✨🌳

Wildlife comes in all shapes, sizes, and evolutionary oddities. Around here, wild local legends are the horseshoe crab! 🐎👟🦀✨

Every year from May to June, the Delaware Bay coastline becomes an important gathering place for horseshoe crab spawning. Our keepers get to be a part of the action, helping survey by counting and sexing horseshoe crabs! 🌊📋✨

EVERYBODY SAY “HEY KIM!” 👋🐒

Kim is our Senior Primate Keeper and Enrichment Coordinator! A big part of Kim’s job is finding fun and creative ways to keep our primates active, curious, and engaged.

Enrichment gives our animals opportunities to do things that come naturally to them, like foraging, exploring, manipulating objects, and problem-solving.

There’s a lot of thought behind what may look like a simple activity. Kim creates experiences that encourage our primates to explore their surroundings, make choices, and express their natural behaviors.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL PRIMATE DAY 🐒🌿

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible diversity of primates around the world! From opposable thumbs and specialized hands to prehensile tails and incredible vision, each species has its own unique set of adaptations shaped by generations of evolution.

But these incredible adaptations can’t protect primates from every threat. More than half of the world’s primate species are threatened with extinction, along with the habitats they depend on.

Today, we celebrate primates and the people working to protect them. Check out some organizations making a difference for primates!

We want to extend a big thank-you to everyone who attended Pickleball for Parrots this past Saturday 🦜🏓. It was such a fun day of friendly competition and community connection! As a result of everyone's support, we raised over $2,000 for the World Parrot Trust, an organization working to restore parrot habitats and populations worldwide.
