Cape May County Zoo AAZK Chapter We are a chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers consisting of staff members at the Cape May County Zoo.

Our chapter is made up of zoo keepers from the Cape May County Zoo. We put on events to raise money to provide enrichment items for our animals (like the toys you see in their exhibits) and to give donations to other organizations that are important in animal conservation. We also send our zookeepers to conferences in order to further their education so that we may provide the best possible care to our animals!

Here is some more Halloween Fun at the Zoo!

The common marmosets, Nico and Leeloo, got a cardboard haunted house from Avellina and Petralia! They LOVE these houses, especially when the keepers add blankets for them to hide under!

The red pandas enjoyed some of the paper bags donated by George Ator! Wally is pictured, and he is searching for treats!

The De Brazza's got a jack o' lantern toy from George Ator that is perfect for hiding treats in. Tot is working hard to get that food out!

Happy World Okapi Day!

Okapi may look like they got dressed by two different animals, but they’re actually our closest living relatives. 🦒 Okapi are currently classified as Endangered and are native to the lowland rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Check out the conservation efforts that directly support okapi populations (okapiconservation.org).

We don’t have any okapi here at the zoo, so we’ll be celebrating on their behalf. 🦒Happy World Okapi Day from your MUCH taller cousins!

Fry, the De Brazza's monkey, and his sister, Tot, had a great time yesterday playing with their taco pinatas donated by MaryAnn Pastore! Keepers hid their diet inside for them to find, and they had a great time trying to get them open using their hands and teeth. Thank you, MaryAnn, for helping us provide fun enrichment to the monkeys!

The barnyard keepers heard a rumor that cows really like jazz, so they called in Marissa and Shannon to put the theory to the test! 🎶🐮 Jilly got to enjoy a little live music for some extra enrichment.

At this time, we can neither confirm nor deny that Jilly is a jazz enthusiast. However, her moos have been sounding suspiciously rhythmic lately.

Thank you to Bella Cocchi for the donations! The Reptile House keepers got this awesome extendable pole which makes the perfect target stick for training Ike, the American Alligator! Bella also donated a step stool to our hoofstock keepers. What can we say? Some of the animals are taller than us! 😂

Happy World Egg Day! 🥚

When we think “egg,” we often think birds. However, eggs make an appearance in nature WAY more often than we give them credit for.

Let’s get local with one of our coastal icons: the horseshoe crab. 🐎👟🦀✨

Every May and June, horseshoe crabs come ashore along our coastlines to mate and lay their eggs. Those tiny green-ish eggs play a huge role in our coastal ecosystems, providing an important food source for migrating shorebirds like the red knot.

This World Egg Day, let’s give some credit to the eggs that help keep our own backyard ecosystem running. ✨🥚🌊
