Congress heads back to work this month, and budget season starts the moment it does.

The line items written this fall will shape what affordable housing looks like in New Jersey next year. Habitat's advocacy network makes it easy to speak up while those decisions are still on the table.

Add your voice before the budgets are set.

Use our national advocacy platform to write to your representatives and encourage them to make housing affordability a priority. https://buff.ly/RXvzIzm

Thank you to the crew from SeaView Landscapes LLC and the volunteers who were out putting the finishing touches on the West Cape May home before the dedication on September 16.

They laid sod, put in the plantings, and finished the turf. A few hours of work and the property was done.

Skilled landscapers and volunteers working the same yard is how the last of it gets finished in one go.

Over the next two weeks, Cape May County schools open for the year. The teachers, custodians, bus drivers and administrators who will be welcoming the students back are the foundation of our community.

But for many working families in Cape May County, the price of housing is making it harder to stay.

Since 2019, teacher pay nationally has risen 24 percent while rents have risen 51 percent, according to the National Council on Teacher Quality. Housing people can actually afford on a school district salary is what closes it.

It matters for students too. The research on housing and education points the same direction every time. Children in stable homes read better, do better in math, and change schools less often.

Good schools start with housing that people who staff them can afford. Let's work together to build that community.

Thank you to the team from RCM Electric for building with us on a recent A Brush with Kindness project.

Their team cleared a clogged sump pump drain, repaired the exterior sump pump outlet that had stopped working, cleaned out clogged gutters, and cleaned up the flower beds.

Repairs like these are how we keep neighbors in safe, stable homes they already own, and that's as much a part of building a Livable Community as putting up a new house.

That journey can start with you.

When you donate your vehicle, it helps build affordable housing for families right here in our community. A simple step can turn past road trips into new beginnings and thatโ€™s a journey worth taking.

State Farm announced this month that it will continue its national partnership with Habitat for Humanity International. In Cape May County, two of our steadiest supporters represent State Farm.

Bob Noel and Rob Gleason both own State Farm agencies in Cape May County. Bob has been a longtime sponsor of our golf tournament. Rob volunteers on our home builds and with our deconstruction crew.

Since 1994, State Farm has given more than $22 million to support the Habitat network's mission across the United States. We're grateful for Bob and Rob's support here locally, and look forward to continuing the partnership into the future.

Thank you both for all you do for our local mission. And thanks to State Farm for backing this work nationally while Rob and Bob back it here.

Bulk trash pickup is coming up in towns across Cape May County, and the dates are different depending on where you live.

Before it goes to the curb, take another look. Habitat Restore Cape May County takes appliances, furniture, cabinets, lamps, artwork, tools, outdoor furniture, some building materials, and more. What sells goes straight back into home builds here in the county.

There's a place for everyone at Habitat.

Although most people picture a construction site, there are lots of ways to get involved.

From the construction site to the office to the ReStore, every role matters and every hour makes a difference. ๐Ÿ’™

Children in stable housing are 25% less likely to miss school.

But the number that doesn't get measured is focus. The ability to sit down at a desk and actually be present โ€” not carrying the weight of an uncertain home.

Stable housing gives children that. And it shows up everywhere.

Help us keep building it. https://buff.ly/IJ93qed

We're building a two-bedroom home in Cape May Court House, and it will be for sale to a moderate-income buyer once applications open. This session covers what you need to know before that happens: mortgage basics, our program requirements, the volunteer hours you contribute, and how to get ready to buy.
