🎨 This Week at Hood River Rotary: Welcoming Amy Gray!

Join us this Thursday as we welcome Hood River native Amy Gray, Executive Director of Arts in Education of the Gorge, for what promises to be an inspiring program about the power of art, education, mentorship, and helping young people feel seen and understood.

Amy’s roots run deep in our community. Born in Hood River and raised on Dee Highway, she attended Mid Valley Elementary, Wy’east Middle School, and Hood River Valley High School before heading to the University of Oregon to study art history.

For the past 20 years, Amy has worked on and off with the Portland Art Museum in its learning department, and she has spent the past decade with Arts in Education of the Gorge—nine years as Program Director and the past year as Executive Director.

Amy will dedicate her presentation to the late Bob Sullivan, her high school counselor, who encouraged her to attend college and showed her firsthand just how powerful it can be when a young person feels truly seen, supported, and understood.

We’re looking forward to hearing Amy share her passion, her story, and the important work Arts in Education of the Gorge is doing for students throughout our community.

We had a lovely annual summer picnic Thursday night down at the marina park! Our district governor Brenda Fling joined us to pass out some awards to our club members. Congrats Matt Rohn, Dianna Risley & Kevin Greenwood!

Huge thank you to all the Rotarians who helped make the picnic 🧺 come to life!

🌀 What is Hood River Rotary? 🌀

Hood River Rotary is a service club made up of people from all walks of life across the Gorge. Our members include business owners, young professionals, community leaders, executives, retirees, and everyone in between—all united by one common purpose: giving back to our community. We live by Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self.

Every Thursday, we gather for a weekly lunch meeting where we connect with one another and hear from local organizations, businesses, and community leaders about what’s happening in the Gorge. It’s a great way to stay informed, build relationships, and discover new ways to make a difference.

Beyond our weekly meetings, our members serve on a variety of committees focused on the many things Rotary is passionate about—community events, service projects, fundraising, scholarships, youth programs, international service, and much more. Every member has the opportunity to find a place where their talents and passions can make an impact.

One of the unique traditions of Rotary is collecting club flags from around the world. As members travel and visit other Rotary clubs, they exchange flags as a symbol of friendship and our global connection.

We’re also proud of our thriving Youth Exchange Program, which gives students the opportunity to experience life abroad while welcoming exchange students into our own community.

Most importantly, Hood River Rotary is about people. We celebrate one another’s accomplishments, support each other through life’s milestones, invest in our youth, and work together to leave our community better than we found it.

The Hood River Rotary Club is pleased to welcome Nicole Ramos, Regional Economist for the Oregon Employment Department, as our featured speaker.

Nicole will provide an insightful look at:
• The current labor market across the Columbia Gorge, with a special focus on Hood River County
• Local employment trends and occupational projections
• How artificial intelligence is expected to impact jobs and careers in our region, based on research from the Oregon Employment Department

Whether you're a business owner, employer, educator, student, or simply interested in the future of our local economy, this promises to be a timely and thought-provoking presentation.

Today’s speaker at our luncheon meeting was Doug Baker, President of the Big River Community Land Trust, a non-profit corporation whose mission is to develop and steward a stable supply of permanently affordable, sustainably built housing which enhances the dynamic character of our central Gorge communities. Each Thursday, our Rotary Club welcomes speakers from across our community to share updates, ideas, and opportunities. Many of our presenters represent local educational programs and organizations, keeping us informed about important initiatives and the latest happenings in the Columbia Gorge. Others highlight local businesses, community assets, or projects that impact our area.

Last Thursday, we heard an informative presentation from our local police department on the City’s Safety and Housing Bond, giving members valuable insight into its goals and progress.

If you own a local business, represent a nonprofit, or are connected with an organization that would benefit from sharing its work with our club, we’d love to hear from you! Please reach out—we’re always looking for engaging speakers and opportunities to learn more about the incredible work happening in our community.

Hood River Rotarians were honored with a visit from Linda Tamura, Author and University professor and Carl Casey, Commander, American Legion Post, who came to tell us the story of the Nisei Veterans who have been honored with Historical Markers in Hood River and belatedly received the Congressional Gold Medal.

We are proud to be part of the Juneteenth event every year at Jackson Part. Such a great time to get all cultures and backgrounds together in our community and celebrate diversity. Thank you to all our Rotarians who helped with this event!
