What do our public monuments say about who we are? Whose stories deserve to be remembered?
Here is an exciting follow up from our post “Imagine Monuments” from this past July. An incredible group of Gorge pre-school, middle- and high-school students spent time this summer with teaching artists Harvest Henderson, Kawika Kalama, Kristi Riedel and Kristi Heck imagining new monuments that celebrate the people, communities, values, and ideas that matter to them.
Through clay, painting, spray paint, collage, drawing, and experimentation, students created joyful, insightful, and deeply personal works that invite us to rethink cultural narratives and public space.
The workshops were a collaboration between Arts in Education in the Gorge and the Portland Art Museum, hosted by Industrial Street Studios, Mosier Community School, Wishram School and the Hood River Valley High School, whose Speech and Debate club gave words to the work.
