What is E. coli?
E. coli is a naturally occurring bacteria, but its presence in the river indicates f***l contamination. E. coli exposure is particularly dangerous for infants & children, elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Protect yourself on the water:
Check Swim Guide before swimming for current E. coli levels.
Wear a life jacket.
Beware of fast currents and steep drop-offs. Know your limits, and swim close to shore.
Rinse off after swimming, and avoid entering the river with open cuts or wounds.
Avoid industrial areas and discharge pipes.
Pack out your garbage.
Report hazardous waste and illegal dumping.

New Report Links Data Centers with Push for New Gas:

“Dirty Secrets” connects the dots between data center growth and new demand for gas power plants and pipelines in the Pacific Northwest.

The rapid proliferation of data centers is behind a new push for gas in the Pacific Northwest, encouraging plans for new power plants and the pipelines that fuel them. As power providers reckon with projections for new electricity demand, the fossil fuel industry sees a new opportunity.

Our new report is a deep dive into the connection between data centers and proposals for new gas infrastructure that would lock in more fossil fuels for decades to come.

Does the “Nuclear Renaissance" sound too good to be true? That’s because it is. Join us on Friday, June 12, 2026 at 12 p.m. PST for the webinar “Collision Course – Hanford Cleanup, Nuclear Energy, and Data Centers.”

This webinar will explore the myth of nuclear reprocessing, why adding new nuclear to the Hanford Nuclear Site is a bad idea, and how the parasitic nature of nuclear energy and data centers are creating a new wave of environmental justice burdens falling squarely on the shoulders Indigenous frontline communities.

Breaking News: Controversial License to Destroy Sacred Tribal Resources Challenged in Federal Court

New lawsuit asks the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to comply with federal protections at Pushpum: Columbia Riverkeeper sued FERC, filing a petition at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation filed a separate petition. Both ask the court to review FERC’s issuance of a hydroelectric license for the controversial Goldendale Pumped Storage Development at Pushpum, a sacred site known to the Yakama Nation as “mother of all roots.”

Columbia Riverkeeper Senior Attorney Simone Anter explains, “FERC’s actions once again set aside cultural resources in favor of development. This is a pattern we are seeing across the nation and the cost continues to be placed on Native nations.”

Tri-City Herald reports, "The Department of Energy lost 96 employees, or 37% of its Tri-Cities staff who oversee the environmental cleanup of the Hanford site, says a new Government Accountability Office report. The overall loss of workers overseeing DOE environmental cleanup work across the nation raises questions about the safety of operations now and in the future, according to the GAO."

Now, DOE is asking for public comment on Hanford's cleanup priorities for the upcoming year, join Columbia Riverkeeper as we remind the federal government that clean up must come first at the site.
