This Sunday we celebrated those who make Hoʻōla Farms possible, our amazing Volunteers. 💜

This year so far we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside 53 different volunteers with so many different backgrounds and stories that all had a common thread: Their want and need to build community and a sense of belonging.

Hoʻōla Farms was built on the idea of providing a way for veterans to reintegrate into civilian life with more than providing just services, we want to provide a place that provides belonging, growth and purpose. With programs like Hawaiʻi Farm-to-Car | Online Farmer’s Market, Hilo Food Hub and Food is Medicine, this is exactly what we’ve built. A place where what we do has a direct impact on local agriculture food systems by putting locally sourced food on our communities tables.

To every volunteer who’s helped us inspect, sort, pack, or just showed up this year- mahalo nui, we wouldn’t be able to do any of this if it weren’t for you 💜

Last month we hosted our first ʻOhana Day at Hoʻōla Farms in partnership with the Hilo VA Center! Even with the rain (a lot of rain…), it was a beautiful day getting together with Veteran families and their keiki💚🌱

This past weekend we hosted an Intro To Grow workshop, where Tony with Mayan World Farm taught us all about how to keep our gardens healthy and thriving. From soil health, pruning and pest management - he provided holistic natural approaches to take on common challenges gardeners face here on Hawaiʻi Island.

Time: 9:30–11:30 AM
Location: Hoʻōla Farms Educational Ranch, Hilo, HI

Free morning on the farm for Veteran families and their keiki. Each session includes a nature walk, animal feeding, and a hands-on gardening activity. Open to Veterans, Veteran spouses, and Veteran family members with keiki ages 0–12. Space is limited - sign up to save your spot in our bio!

We are excited to share a new Groundwork to Grow 4-Week Course: Seed to Plate happening this August! 🌱🥗 Format will be Tuesday Zooms and Saturday in-person field days. 📍East Side of Hawai`i Island

Seed to Plate covers the basics of growing food in Hawaiʻi from community experts including:
-How to get your garden started
-Plant management
-Pest managment
-Harvesting
-Cooking class
-Farm tours!
