“‘Home’ for us is Maui. Both my husband and I moved around Maui most of our lives. I have ancestral roots that run in Lahaina and Uluapalakua. Both places are sentimental to me, as a child my dad would take me to our family burial plot in Ulupalakua where my paternal Grandma is laid to rest. Now as an adult I take my children there and continue the family traditions to Malama Aina. Lahaina, was where I spent quite a bit of my childhood being that my maternal Grandma raised me and my sister for most of our lives. She was born and ended up passing in Lahaina due to the 2023 wildfires. So Lahaina will always have a very strong place in my heart with many memories of what made me the person I am today.

When the 2023 wildfires happened I was living in town but all my immediate family lived in Lahaina. My family was impacted losing everything, having to escape on foot, on top of losing my Grandma. My mom and sister before the fire both loved in low income apartment complex’s. After the fire I knew they would not be able to afford the rent prices at the time on the rental market. Today almost 2 years later and a lot of moving around my sister and her family still do not have a stable, affordable place to live outside of FEMA housing. My mom after being fed up with bouncing from hotel to hotel was ultimately forced to live with me and my family.

We are currently all “managing” for the most part right now but the fear of “one paycheck away from homelessness” is always looming over us like it is for many other family’s on Maui. Our hope is to be able to purchase property for all of us to live on comfortably so that we are not threatened to be homeless because of continued raising rent prices. We fear if we don’t purchase soon our children will not be able to grow up here on Maui our HOME and get to continue the family traditions that were instilled in us as children. Our hope is Hawaiian voices be taken more serious and decisions on housing matters by County Leaders be made with great intentions for Kanaka in mind first. If there is no Hawaiians residing there will be no Hawai’i.” - Tehani Kuhaulua photographed by
