Department of Water Supply’s WAIOHINU - NAALEHU (Public Water System #108) customers - Precautionary Boil Water notice
The County of Hawaii, Department of Water Supply (DWS) began pumping its Naalehu well with an emergency generator this afternoon and a very limited portion of the waterlines will have water. Until further notice, DWS advises Waiohinu
- Naalehu water customers to boil all water if used for drinking and cooking purposes if you have water from your taps. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.
Bring all water used from the tap to a rolling boil for a minimum of one (1) minute and let it cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling destroys bacteria and other organisms in the water.
Alternatively, customers may add between 1-8 drops of new, unscented liquid bleach with a strength of 5-6% (like Clorox) to each gallon of water for disinfection. Fill a clean container with water, add the chlorine and let the water stand for at least 30 minutes before using. The water will have a slight chlorine odor.

This precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until additional water quality testing is completed.

Donations can be made by using the QR code for the hospital foundation. Mahalo in advance!

“KUDOS TO OUR STAFF AT KAU HOSPITAL! Highway 11 right in front of the hospital property washed away in the floods. Construction crews have been working fast to clear roadways to reestablish lifelines into Kau so food and medical supplies can get replenished and staff can relieve the staff that worked throughout the hurricane. The residents are well cared for and the staff have been resilient. There is a sense of deep responsibility for patient care and among the staff, especially for those whose homes have been damaged. Kudos to Erika, Juliann and Jay and the rest of the staff for your dedication to Ka’u Hospital and the people of Ka’u. Mahalo to Congresswoman U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda for checking on us!”
