- Today In Jewish History - 1889: birthdate in Montgomery, Alabama, of Joseph Lewis (June 11, 1889 - Nov. 4, 1968), prominent Jewish American freethinker, atheist activist, and publisher. He became one of the most vocal and aggressive public advocates for secularism and the strict separation of church and state in the United States during the mid-20th century. He joined the Freethinkers of America in 1920 and later became its president, a position he used to launch numerous legal battles against religious practices in public institutions.
Lewis authored several books critical of religion, including The Tyranny of God (1921), The Bible Unmasked (1926), and An Atheist Manifesto (1954).
