🖤 Black Mental Health Matters: Breaking the Stigma & Seeking Support 🖤

Did you know? Mental health challenges disproportionately affect the Black community, yet access to resources and support remains limited. Here are some key statistics highlighting the need for change:

📌 1 in 4 Black Americans experience mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression, but only one-third receive the care they need. (National Alliance on Mental Illness - NAMI)

📌 Black adults are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress than white adults, yet they are less likely to seek therapy due to stigma and systemic barriers. (Mental Health America - MHA)

📌 Only 4% of therapists in the U.S. are Black, creating a gap in culturally competent care. Many Black individuals struggle to find professionals who understand their lived experiences. (American Psychological Association - APA)

📌 Historical mistrust of the healthcare system and financial barriers prevent many Black individuals from seeking mental health care. Lack of representation in the field only increases these disparities. (The American Journal of Psychiatry)

📌 Su***de rates among Black youth have risen by 73% in the last two decades, making mental health support for young Black individuals more crucial than ever. (Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry)

💜 How Can We Break the Stigma?

✅ Normalize conversations about mental health within the Black community.
✅ Advocate for more Black mental health professionals.
✅ Provide culturally competent resources & community support.
✅ Encourage seeking therapy without shame—mental health is just as important as physical health.

✨ YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Help is available. ✨
📞 988 – Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
📞 211 (Connecticut Residents) – Mental Health Support
💻 Therapy for Black Girls / Therapy for Black Men – Find Black therapists

Together, we can break the stigma and ensure that mental wellness is a priority for all. 💜

Celebrating Kayla’s Life and Legacy: Mental Wellness Month 2025

Introduction

January marks the beginning of a new year and an opportunity to reflect on what matters most. It’s also Mental Wellness Month, a time to prioritize our mental health and support one another on our journeys to healing and growth. At Kayla’s Heart Foundation (KHF), this month holds profound significance as we honor Kayla’s life and the mission her legacy inspires.

Kayla’s story is one of love, resilience, and a commitment to making the world a better place. She touched countless lives with her huge heart, unwavering compassion, and sense of humor. Although we lost her in 2018 to su***de, her impact continues to guide us.

The Birth of Kayla’s Heart Foundation

KHF was born out of love and the determination to ensure that no one has to face their mental health struggles alone. Inspired by Kayla’s life and her ability to bring people together, the foundation focuses on promoting mental wellness, breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, and providing resources to prevent su***de.

Every program, event, and initiative we undertake is grounded in the values Kayla embodied: kindness, understanding, and connection.

Breaking the Stigma

Mental health is a vital part of overall well-being, yet so many people suffer in silence due to stigma and fear of judgment. Kayla’s story reminds us of the importance of speaking openly about mental health, seeking help when we need it, and supporting those around us.

This January, we’re sharing her story to inspire hope and spark conversations that break down barriers. Through education and awareness, we can create a world where mental health struggles are met with compassion instead of judgment.

How KHF Is Making a Difference

At KHF, we believe that small, intentional steps can lead to big changes. Here’s how we’re contributing to mental wellness:

Support Groups: Creating safe spaces for individuals and families affected by su***de to share their experiences and find solace.

Education Initiatives: Promoting mental health awareness in schools, churches, and community organizations.

Wellness Programs: Launching a small group this year focused on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness to provide a holistic approach to mental health.

These initiatives are our way of continuing Kayla’s legacy by touching lives with the same compassion and reliability she was known for.

A Call to Action

This Mental Wellness Month, we invite you to join us on this journey of healing and growth. Whether it’s by sharing your story, volunteering your time, or simply spreading awareness, your support makes a difference. Together, we can honor Kayla’s legacy and ensure that her heart continues to touch lives.

Closing

As we embark on 2025, let’s remember that we all have a role to play in creating a compassionate, connected community. Kayla’s life reminds us of the importance of showing up for one another, and her legacy inspires us to keep moving forward with love and resilience.

Stay tuned for more updates, stories, and ways to get involved. Together, we can start the year with hope and healing.
