As each season puts its imprint on Greenwich, so does Greenwich Green & Clean. Since 1986, we have committed ourselves to beautifying shared public spaces.

Since our founding in 1986, we have remained committed to developing partnerships to beautify the public spaces we all share. Our projects include hanging summer and winter baskets in Central Greenwich, landscaping and maintaining town highway exits, organizing town-wide clean ups and invasive plant removal. The members of Green and Clean invite you to take a walk with us through Greenwich and meet our devoted partners. We hope that one you see the role we play in this community, you will be inspired to support our worthy cause.

🌿GG&C Director’s Award | Fred Landman, Sleepy Cat Farm

🐈‍⬛ The Director’s Award this year is presented to Fred Landman of Sleepy Cat Farm, in recognition of his generosity in sharing this remarkable garden with the wider community and his commitment to education, stewardship, and service.

⛲️ Twice each year, the garden welcomes more than 900 visitors through the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days, consistently reaching capacity. More than 30 private groups also visit throughout the season to experience its remarkable landscape, design, and horticulture.

🌸 From whimsical peony umbrellas and dancing meadows to formal vistas and garden rooms, Sleepy Cat Farm invites curiosity and discovery at every turn.

Its spirit of generosity reaches beyond the garden gates. Head Horticulturist Kristi Stromberg Wright and her predecessor, Alan Gorkin, have shared their expertise through community educational programs, including lectures at the Greenwich Botanical Center. The farm also donates its harvest to Neighbor to Neighbor.

🌼🐢 The Sentinel Award For Environmental Improvement | Friends of Binney Park – Native Pollinator Garden

💚 Binney Park’s Native Pollinator Garden provides multiple environmental and community benefits.

🐝🦋 The focus of the garden is native plants—plants that evolved here and play an essential role in our ecosystem. It creates valuable habitat for pollinators, including bees, butterflies and birds, while its deep-rooted native plants help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and improve soil health. Located adjacent to Binney Stream, the native garden also helps filter and slow stormwater runoff, supporting improved water quality. In addition, it provides seasonal beauty and serves as an educational demonstration of pollinator-friendly landscaping and sustainable alternatives to traditional lawns.🌿

🌟 Special credit goes to Joan Seguin, who secured support from a generous foundation interested in pollinator habitat at Binney Park, developed the planting plan, and obtained the town permit that made the project possible. The plants were grown by members of Friends of Binney Park, Greenwich Pollinator Pathway, Greenwich Land Trust and sourced from native plant nurseries.

🙌 Volunteers worked with the Parks Department staff to develop a plan that would fit well within the park and planted more than 350 native plants.

🌱 When people imagine creating a garden like this, they often picture planting flowers
and immediately seeing butterflies arrive. But ecological restoration usually begins with something a little less glamorous – in this case…weeds!

🌼 The Binney Park Native Meadow Garden is a wonderful example of what can happen
when volunteers, town staff and community members work together.

Mary Raymond Memorial Award | Thomas McKinney

✨🪣 The Mary Raymond Memorial Award recognizes an individual or group whose work has focused on community cleanups — a cause Mary Raymond cared deeply about.

👏 Thomas McKinney, Greenwich High School Class of 2025 and now a student at Cornell University, helped coordinate an extraordinary number of cleanup efforts with Greenwich Green & Clean, bringing young volunteers together to make a visible difference throughout town.
During his high school years, Thomas organized 15 cleanups at locations including Central Middle School, Greenwich High School, Binney Park, Cos Cob Park, Bruce Park and Bible Street Playground, as well as family-oriented litter pickups. Along the way, he recruited nearly 1,000 volunteers, who together collected more than 4,000 pounds of trash.

🌿 Even through some very messy projects, Thomas always brought a smile, enthusiasm and a genuine passion for the environment — inspiring those around him to get involved.

🏆 In 2024, the Town’s Sustainability Committee recognized his efforts with a Sustainability Award.
Thomas was unable to attend the ceremony, so his mother proudly accepted the award on his behalf.

We were delighted to honor Thomas with Greenwich Green & Clean’s Mary Raymond Memorial Award and to celebrate the remarkable impact one young person can have on a community. 👏💚

📚 Diane’s Book Award | Char Barnes

🌸 Char has been gardening at her home for over 20 years….and has worked to make it beautiful and ecologically balanced by designing it for maximum impact with texture, rhythm, and beautiful flowers.

🌿🐝🦋 She does have a strong preference for natives,… pollinator plants,…and for Biodiversity!

🌼 There’s almost always something blooming— from a Witch hazelin January to the native Asters at the first hard frost. And there are always masses of bees, butterflies (monarchs and swallowtails right now) and hummingbirds. She also plants the border along the driveway.

🎶 When she’s working in this garden, Char enjoys meeting and chatting with neighbors, many who purposely walk along Highview to have a look at her gardens. This, as she says, makes her heart sing.

🌟 Fairfield House & Garden Golden Trowel Award | Jonathan Fasone

Jonathan Fasone, Park Operations Manager for the Town of Greenwich Parks & Recreation Department, has built a career around his love for the outdoors and his commitment to caring for our community.

A Greenwich native, Jonathan’s own Eagle Scout project was the construction and installation of the gazebo at the Glenville Civic Center playground — still enjoyed by the community today.

🌟 Now, through his work with the Town, Jonathan continues to guide Scouts, students and volunteer groups on beautification and restoration projects throughout Greenwich. From removing invasives and restoring native plantings to improving trails and building structures, these projects bring people together while making our shared spaces more beautiful and usable.

🦅 Jonathan has also mentored countless Scouts through their Eagle projects, holding them to high standards and generously giving his time — often on Saturdays when students are available.

His recent work has included restoration efforts at Helen Binney Kitchel Park and habitat restoration and native tree planting at Grass Island.

🌿 Jonathan is a true steward of both our town land and our community, and we were delighted to recognize his extraordinary dedication with one of our most prestigious honors — the Fairfield House & Garden Golden Trowel Award. 👏

🌾Conte & Conte Crystal Bloom Award | Jaideep Khanna & Saul Sebastian

🌼 A charming ‘mini-meadow’ caught our early attention in backcountry Greenwich, creating a welcoming sight for passersby.

🌾 Ornamental Grasses and a beautiful selection of Wild-flowers create an extraordinary Garden strip and another example of what makes our Town special.

🌟 The Khannas and their long-time Gardener, Saul Sebastian also have interspersed this planting with a selection of native and ornamental trees along the street which makes for an interesting alternative take on the more common mono-cultural rows of the same tree species in front of a house.

👏 Congratulations to the Khannas and Faul, and thank you for sharing this lovely pocket of nature with Greenwich!

🌟 The Ashforth Company Award for Outstanding Landscaping | Miguel Colon, Byram Shubert Library

🌿 A garden grown with generosity and shared with the community. Miguel Colon, longtime librarian and passionate gardener at Byram Shubert Library, affectionately calls this his “Community Garden,” as many of its plants were gifts from others.

🌸 His spectacular display offers beauty throughout the seasons, with a mix of perennials and annuals, including perovskia, irises, roses, zinnias, and his favorite—balloon flower (Platycodon).

🌻 Adding an unexpected flourish to the library grounds, Miguel has also created an entire border of fall-flowering Jerusalem artichokes, bringing a cheerful burst of yellow to the autumn garden.

👏 Congratulations, Miguel, and thank you for nurturing a garden that brings beauty, joy, and community spirit to Byram!

🌿GG&C Beautification of Public Space | Stacy Mortenson

From Byram to Exit 4, Stacy Mortenson brings beauty to Greenwich’s public spaces. As Parks Foreman, she designs plantings and, alongside her team, keeps them flourishing.

💚 Her work brightens the Central Firehouse, Senior Center, Town Hall, Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, the ferry landing, and Bruce Park.

🌱 Stacy’s signature style can be spotted throughout town—from colorful cleome and impatiens on Strickland Road near the Historical Society to thoughtful combinations of grasses, hydrangeas, and hardy and annual vines. Her creations bring color, texture, and joy to our everyday surroundings.

👏 Congratulations, Stacy, and thank you to you and your team for helping Greenwich bloom!

🤎 Derek D’Andrea, the creative force behind this delightful garden center, fills the space with intricate seasonal decorations alongside its many pots and blooms, inviting visitors of all ages to stop and explore.

But Halloween is when the creativity truly comes alive—with a spooktacular display designed to delight…and give you a little fright! 👻

🪨🌿 Certificate of Merit: Special Achievement Award Handcrafted Stone Wall | Stephen Marino

Six decades of craftsmanship, one extraordinary Greenwich resident.

At 97, lifelong resident Stephen Marino is being recognized for single-handedly building, restoring, and maintaining a 400-foot dry stone wall at the corner of Pin Oak Lane and Cottontail Road in Cos Cob. His daughter Carol nominated him for this remarkable achievement.

Every stone came directly from his property—cleared, moved, and placed entirely by hand. Built in the New England tradition, the wall relies on precise balance and interlocking stones, without a drop of mortar or cement.

💚 Stephen’s dedication has created a lasting neighborhood landmark—and he’s still out there caring for it!

👏 Congratulations, Stephen, and thank you for preserving the beauty and character of Greenwich, one stone at a time.
