Service Dogs for Veterans

Service Dogs for Veterans We are based in Upstate South Carolina and serve Veterans within a 2-hour drive of Greenville, SC.

Our program requires that the Veteran attend weekly classes with their dog in Greenville for a period of 8 months to graduate as an ADA Compliant Service Dog team. Our Mission:
To complement the traditional treatment for Veterans with PTSD, TBI, and MST, by training them and a dog to become highly effective service dog teams. Our Impact:
Each of our Veterans has a story that brought them to us. By working alongside these Warriors, we help them write a new chapter of hope for a more promising future.

Progress doesn’t always happen in big leaps. Sometimes, it looks like one small step, one challenge overcome, or one more day of choosing to keep going.

For the veterans training with SD4V, every small step matters - every new skill learned, every challenge faced, and every moment of progress alongside their service dog.

But this message isn’t just for the veterans in our program. It’s for every veteran who may be working through their own challenges, finding their way forward, or wondering what the next step looks like.

You don’t have to move mountains today.
You just have to keep moving.

Small steps still move you forward. So keep going.

At Service Dogs for Veterans, the veteran and their service dog go through the training journey together.

For 8 months, the veteran and dog live together, train together, and learn how to work as a team. Rather than a dog being trained separately by a professional trainer and then handed over to a veteran at the end of the program, SD4V puts the veteran directly into the training process from the beginning.

This hands-on approach helps veterans build a strong partnership with their service dog while learning the skills they will use together every day.

It’s more than training a service dog. It’s about building a team.

It’s about helping veterans find hope again.

One of our graduates described their service dog as one of the best “investments” they could make to regain confidence, reengage with the world, and connect with others.

And in this case, investment isn’t about the financial cost. Through Service Dogs for Veterans, our nonprofit helps make the program accessible to veterans by funding the majority of the cost of their training, so veterans pay very little to participate.

The real investment is in a veteran’s future - in rebuilding confidence, reconnecting with the world, and discovering hope for what comes next.

That’s what this program is all about: creating life-changing partnerships between veterans and service dogs, one team at a time.

At SD4V, we look for dogs with the potential to be both a loving family companion and a successful service dog.

Temperament, personality, and the ability to learn all play an important role in finding the right dog for the journey ahead.

Hear from a SD4V founding creator about what they look for when selecting a dog to enter the program.

Happy National Service Dog Month! This month goes to the dogs!

But not just any dogs - the highly trained service dogs who become trusted partners to Veterans.

A service dog is more than a dog by a Veteran’s side. Behind every Veteran and service dog team are months of training, patience, trust, and learning to work together.

These dogs are trained to perform specific tasks that can help Veterans navigate challenges related to PTSD, TBI, and MST, making everyday life more manageable and helping open the door to greater confidence and independence.

And along the way, something just as important happens: the Veteran and dog become a team.

It’s about more than what a service dog can do. It’s about what can become possible when a Veteran has a trained partner by their side.
