The Bo***ge of Shame

“For the Scripture says, ‘Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.’” (Romans 10:11) Shame entered the human race in the Garden of Eden. Before the Fall of Adam, there was transparent communion between God and man, and between man and woman. After the Fall, relationships were marred and perverted to such an extent that the unhindered love experienced by our ancestors was replaced by distrust, insecurity, and rebellion against God....

Strengthening Souls

“. . . They returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” (Acts 14:21-22) There is something about encouragement that strengthens the soul. A unique Greek word for “strengthen” in the passage is found only four times in the New Testament, all four times in the Book of Acts....

Nothing but Leaves

“And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, ‘May no fruit ever come from you again!’ And the fig tree withered at once.” (Matthew 21:19) Judgement was coming upon unbelieving Israel that refused to embrace the Messiah who was sent for their salvation. Within less than 40 years, Jerusalem and the temple would be destroyed by Roman armies, and the Jews would lose their homeland for hundreds of years....

WHEN YOUR MINISTRY DOES NOT MEASURE UP
H.A. Moldez

How do you know that God is at work in what you are doing in ministry?

The modern way measures the obvious: results that you can count, people added, and programs accomplished. However, can metrics really capture the mystery of grace? Can statistics determine the real work of the Spirit?

Smart plans must be measurable, or so we are told. There is truth to it if what we are doing is determined by quantifiable results. Seeing the fruits of what we do in the Kingdom of God is very encouraging. But oftentimes we don't see clearly the inner work of God in people's hearts. God's work of transformation is usually slow and small, taking time to grow. The work of God is not always seen or counted, especially in the ministry of transformation toward Christlikeness.

Transformation is full of paradox. Jesus said the last will be first. Joy is hidden in sorrow. Small can be big. And not all big events are the work of God. The deep work of the Holy Spirit is usually hidden. The Spirit is shy, except in times of great spiritual revival.

We need to be careful about claiming a "big work for God" when actually God is not there. What is important is not how big our ministry is, but that we are the beloved of God. The Scripture is clear that God does not measure His love by our great performance, but by the person we are, even in our brokenness.

One of the tasks of spiritual work is to open the eyes to see clearly. We are easily blinded by impressive performance meant to "wow" the world. In a success-driven world, it is oftentimes difficult to notice God's work in the humdrum of life. Unless people see beyond what they see, they will not notice the mighty work of God in meekness, His glory being revealed in groaning, and His power in powerlessness. Unless we see God at work—albeit hidden in what appears to be a failure—it is easy to lose heart.

Let us not be discouraged when we don't see many fruits yet. Let us be faithful and do our best. God sees what others don't see about the work we do. God continues the good work He has invited us to participate in, even if the evidence does not appear evident by the world's standards. The work of God is surrounded by mystery. Nothing will be in vain, even the smallest labor of love.

Ponder and Pray:

• How do you feel if your ministry does not measure up to the standard of success?

• Why can't the work of transformation be fully measured by metrics?

• How does being the "beloved" help you to remain faithful in a world obsessed with "doing big"?

• What is your prayer to see the hidden work of God?

Worthy to Suffer

“Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.” (Acts 5:41) We live in an age of “cancel culture” where those who have been deemed to have violated certain codes of behavior or speech are shamed and vilified in social media. It is a way to enforce conformity by penalizing offenders....

The Source of Boldness

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13) Less than two months had passed since the crucifixion of Jesus when the disciples cowered in fear of the Jewish leaders who were intent on squashing any idea of a Messiah who would displace them as the authority over the people of God....

LEADERSHIP OF THE CRUCIFIED
H. A. Moldez

Jesus Christ's path to his crucifixion is the radical way of looking at leadership. Paul calls us to a new mindset to live and lead like Christ (Philippians 2:5-11).

Being so secure of who he is as the Son of God, he let go of his high position of glory to lead in the lowest place of humanity, hidden in humility. He has shown that true greatness is not to seek titles and positions of success, but to serve in secret for God's eyes only. It is to serve in the path of downward mobility "by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:8).

Let's be honest. Our mindset of leadership is still shaped by becoming superstars rather than servants, seeking greatness at the top rather than greatness below. We want to be famous rather than faithful.

If we are true citizens of the Kingdom of God, then we must set aside anything that makes us look higher than others to serve as a nobody. We can only deny our cravings to be recognized if we are secure that being God's beloved is enough. It means being broken of pride to make a name for ourselves.

The way to lead like Jesus Christ is to embrace the cross to die and rise to a new life with Christ. The call is not easy, but we must respond. "Take up our cross to follow Christ." We must resist becoming part of the fan club of celebrity to join the fellowship of the crucified.

Think: What are you called to set aside to serve like Christ?

No Mere Afterthought

“And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” (Acts 1:26) Because Jesus had intentionally chosen the Twelve based on the number of the tribes of Israel (Luke 22:30), the disciples deemed it important to fill the void created by Judas Iscariot who abandoned his apostolic position. They cited Psalm 109:8 to support the need for replacing the betrayer, “Let another take his office” (v20)....
