Tariff uncertainty can be particularly hard on small businesses in both Canada and the U.S., even when a particular business isn't directly paying a tariff. The key word is uncertainty: businesses don't know what their costs, customers, or markets will look like six months from now.

This is especially relevant right now because U.S./Canada trade tensions have escalated again. On August 24, the U.S. imposed new 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, with Canada planning retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8.

Canada is generally more vulnerable to U.S. tariffs because the U.S. is such an enormous market for Canadian exporters. At the same time, Canadian businesses also face higher costs when Canada retaliates against American goods. That inability to plan is particularly damaging to small businesses because they have less cash, fewer employees, less purchasing power, and less ability to absorb mistakes.

The Canada/U.S. situation is significant even for a small business that doesn't directly import or export anything.

Devastating earthquakes have recently struck two regions of the world, leaving deep loss and destruction in their wake. In western Colombia, a powerful 7.4-magnitude tremor centered near San José del Palmar caused hundreds of fatalities, thousands of injuries, and catastrophic damage to homes, hospitals, and infrastructure across major cities.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Flores island, killing at least 68 people, destroying over 4,500 homes, and leaving thousands sleeping in temporary shelters. Both nations have declared national emergencies as rescue crews, medical teams, and international aid agencies work around the clock to reach isolated communities.

"This summer and fall, I am knocking on doors for a political candidate for the first time in my life. A friend whom I deeply respect is running to serve as a city councillor in one of the wards in Hamilton, ON, and he is hoping to unseat an incumbent. Jack’s* door-knocking instructions were simple: “Encourage people to vote.” In the most recent Hamilton election, only 35% of voters went to the polls. Jack knows that the fewer the number of voters, the easier it is for an incumbent to retain his seat. Jack lives in (and is running in) a ward on the far western edge of Hamilton, quite a long way from the downtown core and the poorer eastern end.

Hurricane Lala brought powerful winds and torrential rain to Hawaii, sweeping south of the state and unleashing severe flash flooding, landslides, and widespread devastation. One woman lost her life, over 100 homes were damaged or destroyed, and major infrastructure was severely impacted, including destroyed bridges and collapsed sections of the Pāhala Highway, which cut off access to a regional hospital.

Communities now face the arduous task of emergency cleanup, repairing damaged homes, and restoring essential services amidst statewide brown water advisories and hazardous conditions.

Environmental racism describes the ways environmental harms are not experienced equally. Communities that experience marginalization are often more likely to experience environmental hazards, pollution, and climate-related disasters which deepens existing social and economic inequalities.

Canada’s wildfires provide a powerful example. Indigenous communities are among those experiencing significant impacts, including threats to homes, livelihoods, and culturally significant places.

At the same time, Indigenous peoples have longstanding relationships with the land and waters and hold knowledge and practices that offer important perspectives on caring for creation and responding to climate change. Yet frequently their voices are excluded from the decisions that affect them.

Environmental justice means asking who has a voice in decisions about the land, whose knowledge is valued, and who bears the consequences of those decisions.
