GECRC's first ever full-day Summer Program has been underway for a week now, and we have already made so many incredible memories! This program would not be possible without the help of all of our volunteer interns and volunteer tutors who have selflessly given their time, talents, and energy to our students in the classroom, in the lunchroom, and on the playground! The volunteers assist our staff in helping students begin their various grade-focused PBL (problem-based learning) projects in the mornings, socialize with them during lunch, and engage them in sports and games at recess and in the camp-focused second half of the day. THANK YOU to all of our volunteers - we appreciate you more than we could say!

Our Summer Program students enjoyed meeting Julia Comfort Dog, Michael Comfort Dog and Shadrach Comfort Dog from LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs this morning! The sweet pups brought so much joy and a sense of calm to our students as they prepared for another fun and busy week at Summer Program!

The first day of full-day GECRC summer program was a tremendous success! It was so great to see all of the students from D41 and CCSD89 schools gathering together at Arbor View Elementary alongside our volunteers and staff! Can’t wait for Day 2!

GECRC warmly welcomed more than 200 children and parents to Arbor View Elementary School on Friday for the inaugural Meet the Staff Night, a family engagement event that officially kicked off the 2026 Summer Program season which starts today!

The energy throughout the evening was contagious as families connected with program staff, received their summer program t-shirts, enjoyed dinner together, and learned more about the many resources available to them through more than a dozen participating community partners. Most importantly, students arrived excited and eager for a summer filled with learning, friendship and discovery. This year marks an especially exciting milestone for GECRC as we launch our expanded full-day, full-week Summer Program, providing even greater opportunities for academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, recreation, field trips, and family support for qualifying students across our community.

Our staff is excited to wear their new GECRC Summer Camp staff shirts! Our campers will have similar shirts for their field trip days, which will make it easy to keep everyone organized and together for fun off-campus outings! Thank you to Rob Herbold of Sign Identity for producing such great shirts for us!

Clearing out those closets and drawers? GECRC Summer Program could use some gently used shorts and pants for students, size children’s XS to adult S. It's summer staff orientation week at GECRC! Associate Director of Program and Volunteers Lizzy Doty and Associate Program Director Karla Kampen kicked off the week with an information session and ice breaker session for classroom instructors and camp counselors. We are all looking forward to a really exciting first week of Summer Program beginning at Arbor View next Monday, June 15!

Whether you're a seasoned Mahjong player or brand new to the game, Mahjong for GECRC 2026 promises an evening of connection, laughter, and community impact. Missy Mahjong returns alongside experienced coaches to guide intermediate players through lively, hands-on play, while two dedicated (sold out!) beginner tables offer more guided instruction for those eager to learn.

Your ticket includes a welcome drink, light bites, and one raffle ticket, with additional drinks and raffle tickets available throughout the event. Tickets are $100 per person. Mahjong winners will also receive bonus raffle tickets as part of the fun! Play will take place in relaxed 40-minute rounds, with guests rotating tables and meeting new friends along the way.
Most importantly, every ticket purchased helps open the door to an unforgettable summer for more than 200 local elementary and middle school students participating in GECRC's full-day Summer Program. Our staff has been busy at the GECRC office this week, preparing for the Summer Program beginning June 15 at Arbor View Elementary!
Our Associate Director of Program and Volunteers Lizzy Doty lead two orientations for incoming summer volunteer interns Wednesday. These incredible volunteers are dedicating anywhere from one to five four-hour volunteer shifts each week between June 15 and July 31. We have more volunteer intern positions available, as well as general volunteer shifts which are a little bit more flexible.
