GECRC is an afterschool and summer tutoring and mentorship program for students in D41 and CCSD89

Last spring, members of the GECRC Board awarded two special students with the inaugural Janis Pfister Literacy Award. Named after our beloved former board member and Literary Event Committee Chair Janis Pfister, the award recognizes a GECRC student's love of reading and incredible dedication and improvement in that endeavor. As part of the award, the students are awarded five books to enjoy throughout the year, with a second copy made available to gift to the student's tutor.

Last week, GECRC Board members Penelope Johnson and Lori Gapinski joined Literary Event Committee member and Janis' daughter Caroline Shields to deliver those promised books to now 4th grade Park View student Iang (first photo) and now 3rd grade Churchill student Robert (second photo). Thank you so much to Lori, Penelope and Caroline, and congratulations once again to Iang and Robert! Your love of reading is an inspiration to your classmates and all of us at GECRC.

Congratulations to our October Volunteer of the Month, Grace Kaufman!
Grace is a junior at Naperville North High School, where she is involved in scholastic bowl and varsity wheelchair basketball. She started tutoring with GECRC this school year and works mostly with first graders at Park View.
"I love seeing the pride the kids have when they work through a tough problem and finally understand a concept, " she says. "I’ve really gotten to create a relationship with two students in particular and am delighted at the way they have embraced me as their 'teacher' (their words, not mine). Their silliness compliments mine, and we work well as a group."
Grace says that some of her most interesting experiences have involved talking with different students about her wheelchair. "I may be the first person in a wheelchair they can ask questions to," Grace shares. "The kids display a curiosity about my disability that makes me excited to answer their questions."

Thank you so much to the wonderful students in the St. Petronille Youth Ministry for donating so many school supplies to our GECRC students at the beginning of this school year! We are so grateful for your generosity and support! A special thank you to our volunteer Clare Sanford for coordinating the effort with GECRC!

We wanted to take a moment to introduce the new officers of our 2026-27 GECRC Board of Directors! From top left, clockwise, Jodi Herbold is our Board President, Penelope Johnson is our Board Vice-President, Becky Gasaway is our Board Secretary, and Nell Gallagher is our Board Treasurer. Thank you, ladies, for your volunteer commitment to GECRC! We are grateful for your leadership.

We are thrilled to introduce one of our newest staff members, Ana Zaragoza, who is a 4th grade classroom coordinator at Churchill Elementary.
Ana recently graduated from Elmhurst University with a degree in Psychology and Spanish. In her free time, she likes to go to concerts and travel.
"I've visited 17 countries and plan to visit many more," Ana says.

We are thrilled to introduce one of our newest Churchill site classroom coordinators, Lizzie Sandner! Lizzie is a student at the College of DuPage and comes to us with an extensive background in childcare.
"I’m excited to be part of the GECRC community where I can help create a safe, fun, and welcoming environment for children to learn, grow, and thrive," Lizzie says. "I look forward to help make this a wonderful year for our students and families!"

Interested in getting more involved in our community? Please consider becoming an after-school volunteer tutor at one of our five sites: Churchill Elementary (pictured), Lincoln Elementary, Hadley Junior High, Glen Crest Middle School and Park View Elementary! Minimum requirement is just one hour per week.

Current and volunteers simply need to login to their Better Impact account, make changes to any information that has changed, and answer any new questions. New volunteers will need to complete a brand new application and complete an online orientation session.

If you know you can volunteer at some point in the school year, but not right away (for example, you might have a fall activity and can't start volunteering until January or even spring ), please still apply now so we know how many volunteers we have in our pool throughout the school year.

Thank you SO much to all of the community members who have donated so many wonderful Halloween costumes to our students this year! The costumes have brought many smiles to the faces of our students as they selected which costume they will wear to all of the community Halloween festivities. An extra special thank you to Rhea Lana's of West Chicagoland for your generous donation! And thank you to all of our volunteers who have sorted, organized and distributed costumes to the students!

Please join us in congratulating two of our wonderful long-time staff on their recent promotions! Lizzy Doty (at left) was recently promoted to Program Director - Operations, while Karla Kampen (at right) was recently promoted to Program Director - Curriculum & Evaluations. Both Lizzy and Karla have been dedicated members of the GECRC team since 2019. Karla is the site lead at our Churchill site, while Lizzy is site lead at Park View. Both women hold essential leadership roles during GECRC summer program, as well. Congrats once again to Lizzy and Karla!
