What happens between the final school bell and the end of a parent's workday?

At Kensington Elementary School, YMCA afterschool is about more than homework help and a safe place to spend the afternoon. It's where children build friendships, practice communication, learn to work through disagreements and develop confidence through everyday experiences.

Our newest story, After the Bell, takes us inside the program to hear from students, educators and YMCA staff about the learning that happens beyond the classroom.

We're grateful to Georgetown County School District and all of our community partners and supporters who help make these opportunities accessible to children and families across Coastal Carolina.

Employee Spotlight: Meet Jordan! ✨

For Jordan, the Tidelands Health Georgetown Family YMCA feels like a big house filled with family. From seeing familiar faces at water aerobics to meeting new people and forming friendships, the connections make serving this community so special.

Jordan loves that the Y brings people together and offers resources for everyone to use, grow and feel welcome.

Jordan’s advice around the water? Know your swimming ability, be aware of your surroundings and try to avoid putting yourself in a situation you aren’t ready to handle.

Meet McDonald Elementary Y Afterschool!

Here’s a little peek at what afternoons look like at our McDonald Elementary Y Afterschool program — building, creating, imagining, playing games, making friends and simply getting to be kids. 🧱🎲🦖

At all of our Y Afterschool sites, we believe PLAY MATTERS.

After spending the day learning in the classroom, kids need time to put away the screens, unwind, move, create, laugh and connect with each other.

And while it may look like “just playing,” something pretty important is happening.

Through play, kids learn to problem-solve, communicate, take turns, handle winning and losing, use their imagination, include others and build friendships.

Because Y Afterschool is more than a place to go until parents get off work.

It’s a place to play.
A place to grow.
A place to belong.

And at McDonald Elementary, there’s always room for another friend! 😊

• Mammograms and breast cancer screening
• Recognizing breast changes to discuss with your health care provider
• Financial assistance and resources through the Tidelands Breast Health Program for eligible individuals
