🐾 How Is Lyla Still Here? 🐾

Honestly, we're asking ourselves the same question.

Lyla has been waiting at Saint Frances Animal Center since May 14, 2025, making her our longest-term resident. Day after day, she watches other dogs leave for their forever homes while she patiently waits for her turn.

And we just can't figure out why.

At just 3 years old, Lyla is everything so many adopters say they're looking for. She's friendly, affectionate, playful, and full of life. She gets along well with other dogs, walks nicely on a leash, and has spent countless hours with staff and volunteers learning how to be the very best companion she can be.

She already knows commands like sit, down, paw, stay, and come. She loves attention, and has a goofy personality that can brighten even the hardest day. A few of her favorite things are water, playing ball, and tug of war!

Lyla doesn't need to be perfect. She already is.

What she needs is someone willing to look past the kennel door and see the amazing dog we've all fallen in love with.

After more than a year of waiting, we're hoping the person who sees this post is the person Lyla has been waiting for.

Some cats ask for attention. Juno is learning how to trust it. 🖤🤍

Juno won't be the cat who immediately climbs into your lap or demands to be the center of attention. Instead, she's the cat whose quiet victories mean everything.

A gentle hand that she doesn't shy away from. A curious glance from across the room. The first time she chooses to come closer on her own.

At just 7 months old, Juno is still discovering what it means to feel safe. She came to Saint Frances through the Wedgefield hoarding case and had a difficult start to life, but she hasn't let that dim her sweet spirit. Beneath her cautious exterior is a young cat who wants to believe that good things are possible.

Lilac has been waiting since December. Let's change that. 💜🐾

While other dogs come and go, Lilac is still waiting for someone to see just how special she is.

If you're looking for a calm couch potato, Lilac probably isn't your girl. But if you're looking for a dog who brings excitement, laughter, and pure joy to every day, you need to meet her.

Lilac lives life at full speed. She loves to run, play, wrestle, and make new dog friends. A play yard, a canine sibling, or an active family would be a dream come true for this fun-loving pup. Give her room to play, and she'll happily show off her zoomies and her goofy personality.

September marked an important step toward returning to normal operations at Saint Frances following the heartbreaking cruelty case we dealt with in July. While that experience still affects our animals, staff, and volunteers, September brought renewed hope and some much-needed happy new beginnings.

We are incredibly grateful to the rescue partners who stepped up to give some of our animals new opportunities, and even more excited about the adoptions that saw so many of our Saints move on to loving homes. There is something especially meaningful about seeing dogs and cats from our own community find new families right here locally.

But the need for our services keeps growing. By the end of September, we had already taken in nearly as many animals as we did during all of 2025. Every one of those animals represents a life that depends on us for safety, compassion, and a chance at a better future.
One area where we hope to see improvement is our return-to-owner numbers. Few moments bring us more joy than reuniting a lost pet with the family who has been desperately searching for them. You can help make those reunions happen faster by ensuring your pets are microchipped, wear identification tags, and have current contact information on file and on their tags. As much as we love meeting your furry family members, we’d much rather see them safely back home where they belong!

Unfortunately, our shelter remains critically overcrowded, operating at nearly 300% capacity for dogs and 175% for cats. Behind those percentages are real dogs and cats waiting for their chance to be someone’s beloved companion. Our team works tirelessly to give each one the care, attention, and love they deserve, but we cannot do it alone.
Adopting changes a life. Fostering creates space to save another. Volunteering gives an animal the extra love and attention they need while they wait.

Every act of kindness makes a difference. Together, we can give more of our Saints the happy lives they deserve.

We know firsthand the impact that volunteers can make, which is why Saint Frances Animal Center is proud to participate in the Days of Service hosted by the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation from October 20-24.

This countywide week of service is an opportunity for neighbors, businesses, nonprofits, and community members to come together and make a difference. Our staff and volunteers are committed to rolling up their sleeves and giving back throughout the week.

Earlier this year, during the Wedgefield hoarding case, our organization experienced the power of community support firsthand. Volunteers from across the area, including members of the Bunnelle Foundation staff, stepped forward when hundreds of animals needed help. Their compassion, hard work, and willingness to serve made an enormous difference during a challenging time.

Now, we are excited to pay that generosity forward.

We encourage everyone to consider getting involved in Days of Service. Together, we can strengthen our community, support local organizations, and demonstrate what is possible when people come together to help others.

Thank you to the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation for organizing this meaningful week of service. We look forward to serving alongside so many dedicated volunteers across Georgetown County! ❤️

Our shelter is full, and we have so many dogs who desperately need help. Behind every kennel door is a sweet soul waiting for a chance, a safe place to rest, and someone to show them what it feels like to be loved.

We cannot do this alone. WE NEED YOU. 🐾❤️

Andromeda is 5 years old and 28.5 pounds, making him a great medium-sized companion. He’s great with other dogs and has an easygoing, cheerful personality that makes him pretty hard not to love.

⏰ Position: Full-Time - Must have open availability

About the Position:
Animal Care Technicians play a vital role in the health, comfort, and well-being of the animals in our care. This hands-on position is perfect for someone who is compassionate, dependable, and ready to be part of a dedicated team working to help animals find loving homes.

Responsibilities:
✅ Feed and provide fresh water to animals
✅ Clean and sanitize cages, kennels, and work areas
✅ Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, or stress
✅ Assist with handling and moving animals safely
✅ Maintain daily records and observations
✅ Follow all safety, cleaning, and animal care protocols

Qualifications:
✔ High school diploma or equivalent
✔ Previous experience working with animals required
✔ Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks throughout the day
✔ Comfortable working with a variety of animals
✔ Strong communication and teamwork skills
✔ Willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed
