With a heavy and tender heart, we share that our beloved classmate, Howard High School Class of ’68, John Johnson, transitioned from this earthly life and went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday. John’s passing leaves a deep ache in our hearts, yet we rejoice in knowing he now rests in the eternal peace and loving presence of God. His memory, his laughter, and the spirit he carried among us will continue to live on in the stories we share and the bonds we formed. May his soul find perfect rest, and may we hold his family in our prayers during this time of sorrow and remembrance.

02/16/2026 - I n November 1904, George Edward Taylor was named the presidential nominee for the National Negro Liberty Party. Also known as the National Liberty Party, it was said to be the first political party created for and by Black people.

02/12/2026 - The South Carolina State Fair was a ‘whites only’ event. As a result, the black community took part in the South Carolina Colored State Fair one week later. The ‘colored’ event was sponsored by the Colored State Fair Association. The segregated fair was in existence from 1908 to 1964, which marked the legal ban of segregation.

02/08/2026 - Guion Bluford. Guion Stewart Bluford Jr., Ph.D. (born November 22, 1942), (Col, USAF, Ret.), is an American aerospace engineer, retired U.S. Air Force officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, who was the first African American in space.

02/09/2026 - Robert Smalls, an African American born into slavery in Beaufort, S.C. Smalls led an uprising aboard a Confederate transport ship, the CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, and sailed it north to freedom.

02/03/2026 – Frank Wills, a Black security guard, discovered President Nixon’s cover-up which later caused his resignation as President of the United States. Despite Wills’ discovery he struggled to find work for the rest of his life.

LITTLE KNOWN BLACK HISTORY FACTS

02/02/2026 – Nicodemus, Kansas was founded in 1877, led by Rev. W.H. Smith, a black minister, and W.R. Hill, a white land developer, and five other black men who formed the Nicodemus Town Company and began visiting churches in Kentucky to encourage people to move to Kansas. Kansas was a free state, part of the Underground Railroad and home to abolitionist John Brown. Handbills and flyers distributed by the company called Nicodemus a place for "African Americans to establish a black self-government.
By the mid-1880s Nicodemus was a small, bustling town. There were two newspapers, three general stores and at least three churches. The town had several small hotels, an ice cream parlor, bank, livery and several homes. The population was an estimated 700 at the town's heyday.

02/01/2026 - In early 1945, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to be stationed in Europe during World War II — was deployed to England to take on a seemingly impossible mission. Their assignment? Sort through, catalog, and prepare for delivery a backlog of more than 17 million pieces of mail to US soldiers fighting abroad and their loved ones back home, often mislabeled or without a complete address. The task was Herculean, and the conditions arduous. As well as the terrors of war, the 855 women of the 6888th, led by Major Adams, faced segregation and sexism within their own military, and carried out their important work in derelict buildings lacking adequate light and heat. They were given six months to complete the job. They did it in 90 days, bringing missives of hope to the front lines.
