Wonderful news!

The National Trust’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and The Conservation Fund's Legacy Places Initiative are partnering to advance the preservation and long-term protection of historically significant Black heritage sites across the United States. Each year, hundreds of these historic sites are lost as buildings and landscapes sit abandoned, forgotten or dismissed.

The partnership was inspired in part by our organizations' shared involvement with the historic Ben Moore Hotel in Montgomery, Alabama. The hotel was a rich cultural landmark for Black Americans living in Montgomery under Jim Crow. However, prolonged vacancy has led to the hotel's structural deterioration.

Acquired by The Conservation Fund in November of 2025, the Ben Moore Hotel was subsequently named one of the National Trust’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America in 2026.

Under this new partnership, The Conservation Fund will secure at-risk African American heritage sites, and the National Trust will help advance those sites preservation efforts and long-term stewardship, creating a stronger pathway for their restoration and future reuse.

This summer during August the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project (MPCPMP) is conducting a fund-raiser that will support the continued work of acknowledging and commemorating the lives of African ancestors of the Middle Passage – those who perished in the interior of Africa, during the forced trek to the coast, and while crossing the Atlantic, as well as those who survived and whose labor, knowledge, and cultures helped build the Americas. MPCPMP has the opportunity to receive matching funds from BackBlack, a non-profit organization that has for its 5th year designated August as Black Philanthropy Month. We ask that you financially support us, especially now, so that we can maximize any donation made throughout the month of August. Based on weather and ocean currents, July through October are part of “hurricane season.” Traditionally this was the peak arrival time of captive people from Africa to the Americas during the trans-Atlantic human trade from the 1500s to the mid-1800s. The Spanish in 1526, intending to establish a settlement on the Atlantic coast of mainland North America, transported approximately 100 Africans; in 1860, U. S. citizens, defying a ban on importation of captive Africans with the intent of enslavement, smuggled 110 young women and men to Mobile, Alabama. These two events mark the bookends of documented U.S. Middle Passage history – the first and the last arrivals. In both instances, the Africans resisted enslavement.

The Project has worked with community residents at both these first and last documented U.S. arrival locations, as well as at more than 60 other sites, to successfully plan and install markers and conduct remembrance ceremonies that acknowledge this history and commemorate the sacrifices, struggles, and achievements of African ancestors and their descendants. Additionally, on August 23rd MPCPMP observes the UNESCO International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
