🌱🐣 Learning came to life in Ms. Osborne and Ms. Walker’s 2nd Grade classroom!

As part of their recent unit on plant and animal life cycles, our young scientists explored the amazing journey of living things from beginning to growth! 🌿 Students planted and cared for their own plants, created interactive foldables 📚 to showcase the stages of both a plant’s life cycle and a turtle’s life cycle 🐢, and even had the incredible opportunity to watch baby chicks develop from eggs 🥚 through incubation all the way to hatching 🐥.

There is nothing quite like seeing science happen right before your eyes! 👀 Through hands-on learning, observation 🔬, and discovery, our students gained a deeper understanding of how plants and animals grow and change over time 🌻. From caring for growing plants 🌱 to witnessing the miracle of new life 💛, this unit provided unforgettable learning experiences every step of the way.

We are so proud of their curiosity, enthusiasm, and hard work throughout this exciting unit! 🎉 Their excitement for learning and exploration will continue to help them grow into the scientists of tomorrow 👏✨

🧮🔥🏆 At Steel City Academy, we believe every student is a MATHlete!

After a year of intentionally building our math aspirational environment, strengthening student math identity, and helping students see themselves as capable mathematicians, we culminated the year with our very first annual Steel City MATHlete Bowl! Throughout the year, our students have worked to think critically, solve problems using multiple strategies, engage in mathematical discourse, and build confidence in their mathematical abilities. The MATHlete Bowl was a celebration of that growth, perseverance, and joy.

Thank you so much to everyone who brought the energy, the posters, the cheers, the squad spirit, and the LOVE for math! The atmosphere was electric, and our students are already asking when the next MATHlete Bowl will be! 🤪🎉

🎉📚 The finish line is in sight, Steel City Academy families! 📚🎉

As we head into the final week of the school year, here’s a quick reminder of each grade level’s last day of school:

🎓 8th Grade: Tuesday, June 2
🌟 Kindergarten: Tuesday, June 2
📖 5th Grade: Wednesday, June 3
🏫 All Other Grades: Thursday, June 4

While summer break is right around the corner ☀️😎, these last few days are still incredibly important! Students will be wrapping up projects, celebrating accomplishments, participating in special activities, making lasting memories with classmates, and finishing the year strong. 💪✨

✅ Please make sure your child is at school and on time each day through their final day of attendance. Every day counts, and we want all of our scholars to be part of these meaningful end-of-year moments! 💙⚙️🔥

🔥💙 Our youngest Baby Flames had an unforgettable adventure yesterday!

Ms. Fairley, Ms. Grigsby, and several of our amazing kindergarten parents took our kindergarten students to Ninja Kidz Action Park for a day filled with movement, laughter, and celebration! From bouncing on trampolines and tackling exciting obstacle courses to navigating ninja-style challenges! The smiles were big, the energy was high, and the sense of community was even stronger. Thank you to Ms. Fairley, Ms. Grigsby, our incredible parent volunteers, and everyone who helped make this day so special for our youngest learners. We are so proud of all they have accomplished this year and cannot wait to see them continue to grow and shine! ❤️🔥

Last week marked our final school-wide Math PLC day of the 2025-2026 school year 🧮

This year, improving math instruction and outcomes has been our number one priority, which means we aligned our time, talent, and teamwork around this critical work!

In Semester 2, our team engaged in differentiated Math PLC groups, including:

🔥 A Math Internalization & Planning PLC focused on deepening curriculum internalization and planning for high-quality instruction
🔥 A Math Institute focused on building conceptual understanding for lead teachers and paraprofessionals
🔥 A cross-content STEM PLC focused on creating more opportunities for collaboration, interdisciplinary thinking, and real-world problem solving across content areas

Together, these PLCs reflected one of the biggest pieces of our staff and student identity work this year:

I AM A MATHlete! Being a MATHlete means we can all engage in math, think critically, approach problems through multiple strategies, and build confidence in our mathematical thinking.

We loved reading the powerful end-of-semester reflections from our Math Institute participants:

🧠 “I know I’m a MATHlete because I now enjoy learning the different ways to teach math.”

🧠 “I used to think I was extremely incompetent about math instruction, but now I think I have potential.”

A special shoutout to our Minute to Win It Math teachers, Ms. Larkins, Ms. Grigsby, Mr. Ward, and Ms. Arthur, who spun the math concepts wheel and successfully taught math mini lessons to their groups with joy, multiple representations, student discourse, and strong mathematical vocabulary!

At Steel City, we are building a school-wide math identity rooted in confidence, conceptual understanding, collaboration, and JOY.

At Steel City Academy, we love creating unforgettable experiences and core memories for our kids while deepening their pride in being from Gary! ✨🖤

It was such a JOY to take our 6th graders to see the Michael movie! In a theater all to ourselves, our students, sequined gloves and all, got to learn about Michael Jackson’s childhood right here in Gary, sing along to his music, and of course break out their favorite Michael Jackson dance moves during an end-of-movie dance celebration. 🎤🕺🏽✨

Moments like these remind our students that greatness can come from their very own city and that their stories matter too. 🌟

🦁🐒 A wild day of learning and adventure! 🦩🦓 Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade scholars had an unforgettable time exploring the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago alongside several amazing parent chaperones who helped make the trip extra special! ❤️ From spotting powerful lions 🦁 and playful chimpanzees 🐵 to seeing flamingos 🦩, zebras 🦓, rhinos 🦏, aardvarks, Père David’s Deer 🦌, and so many more incredible animals, every corner of the zoo brought new excitement and discovery.

🌟 Field trips like these give our students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences while making lifelong memories with classmates and families. The smiles, laughter, curiosity, and joy throughout the day were truly priceless! A huge THANK YOU to all of the parents and staff members who helped make this adventure possible — our students had an absolute blast! 🚌☀️💙
